Nice piece of Ovation history on Ebay. . Ali neck and plastic top. And it's a 12-fretter. It'll be interesting to see what it fetches

First time I saw one of thes old Applause Ovations I was scared.

This must be much older than the one I saw.

It's actualy a little later than the seller thinks. The Academy guitars evolved from the Medallion/Matrix/Applause project, so it's probably from around '76/'77. They weren't made for long. Kim has a slothead version that sounds damn good for what it is.

I think; after seeing one for the first time last year. This is in fact where a lot of the traditionalists first got their opinions about Ovation. These are scary, heavy, plastic sounding guitars. To hold one and play it you can tell it is not refined like the later works of art Ovation became known for making. These early versions are very artificial feeling and sounding. Almost Alien..?? really... And although an amazing accomplishment, for the day in which they were made, these metal necks and plastic body's seem like something made for playing underwater or something. Nothing natural on them. Very strange indeed. Great collectors pieces though I think these will someday become very sought after by collectors it may take another 50 years but at the prices they fetch now a good investment.

And in fact you could make a canoe paddle out of one of these they have no wood on them if remember right. They'll last just short of forever

I won this Academy Guitar. I thought, kind of an eclectic piece to add to my collection.

Well done, that little piece of obscure Ovation history is worth 50-odd bucks of anyone's money. Let us know how it sounds.

Zen, If I'd seen that guitar on the auction block you might have had someone to bid against. It looks like a cool, unique rig. Congratulations on the score. Buckaroo

Aside from a slot head, this is the coolest Ovation ever made. In many ways it was more of a technological step. Of course the step was directly into a cow pie but it was a step forward just the same.

I was thinking about that for my daughter's backpack guitar, but figured it was too big. It would be a great campout and travel guitar, though.

Received "the Academy" today. Excellent condition. The neck is straight as an arrow. Feels like an aluminum neck, though not as bad as I remember some Applause models feeling. The action is quite good. The low E string is boomy though the overall sound is very mid rangey. In some positions it sounds like a uke. Not unpleasant though. The nice thing about the guitar is that I can clean the plastic top with Windex!
