I just bought an Ovation 1869 for $700 in absolutely MINT condition but the problem here is do I need a acoustic amp to play it or can I use an electric amp? I have a Line 6 Vetta II with the XLR connection but I am not sure if it is for an acoustic guitar. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks, Rich

First off, welcome to the group. You will find this is a great group of people.

I have never liked the sound of an acoustic through a electric amp. But I would say try it and see if you like it. Then go to a guitar store and try a acoustic amp. See which you like best.

Try it. Keep it on the clean channel and watch out for the feedback. Do a search for acoustic amps on this site and you'll find lots of stuff. There are differences.

Welcome to the OFC Rich, and congratulations on your new guitar.

I admit that plugging in an acoustic guitar in an electric amp sounds rather odd. Finding the right acoustic amp is a matter of personal preference, with several factors to consider (including money).

For a little over $300 you might consider a 30-watt Fender Acoustasonic DSP. It seems to deliver more amp for the money you're willing to spend.

Currently, I own an Ibanez TA35, one of their troubadour series of acoustic amps. It "might" not come close to the Acoustasonic, but I'm pretty happy with the purchase, considering the tight budget that I had at that time. I've owned it now for the past two years, and I'm not looking forward to parting with it -- at least not anytime soon.

Visit the local and big box music retailers in your area and check out the other brands and models that I haven't mentioned. Good luck.

The question really is what you want the amp for. Are you going to be performing seriously with it, or are you going to just be messing around?

We have a Roland Cube 30 electric guitar amp that we also plug my daughters O into. It has a bunch of digital effects and modeled amps. The sound is fine for her messing around in the house and with friends. She can even do performances in church or at school. But it doesn't sound like a great acoustic guitar, it sounds like a great guitar through the amp.

Plugged into a real acoustic amp it sounds like a real acoustic guitar.

So it comes down to what you will do with the amp.

Rich ... I think your Line6 should have a "preamp" only setting which should work just fine ... my Flextone has that setting and it bypasses all of the traditional amp models. You can then dial in the digital effects (chorus and reverb work well). Again, depends on what you're using it for but check it out and use your own ears (and those of someone you trust) to make your decision.

And if the XLR connection works, use it. It is much cleaner than the standard 1/4 plug and is much louder on my amp.
