I have a question for the group. I had just been using a direct box to plug in and my Ovations sounded great. I have a Martin D-18V and put a pickup in it. That pickup did not have a preamp so I bought a LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI. Whenever I played my O's I wold just plug in to the Baggs. I would change the eq on the Baggs to flat. And it didn't sound as good. I ab'd my 2 O's today and noticed they still didn't sound as good as I remember. So I went with a straight direct box instead of the Baggs. Sounded much better. Is this just me? I have read great thing about the Baggs. I am going back to church and try my Martin without the Baggs. How do you all hook up to a sound board? Do you plug direct through a direct box?

Thanks,

Bill

Due to a recent aquisition I am now able to plug into a Fender Acoustasonic Jr. DSP and then out to a DI and house system.
This gives my 12 string and Papoose a bit of flavor and temper control.

I like the monitor ability as well.

I either go straight to the mixer via XLR, or through a DI if I happen to bring one that doesn't have an XLR. For fun sometimes I bring my MicroCube and use that for the DI. In church I do get some interesting reactions to the Marshall model with the gain up a little.

Williamfriggle,I ran into the same thing.I`ve used L.R.Baggs for years and loved their pickups.I also have used an acoustasonic amp as MWoody does with a sound i`ve found hard to beat.I`ve used a Baggs P.A.di box in the last couple of years on my martim, and many different pickups and guitars and fount it to be a great tool for my all wood guitars. But i have never felt it helped the sound of any Ovation, and i`ve tried it on at least five or six.Maybe its the Ovation preamp, plastic back? I`m sure someone here can tell us the tech reason, but to me Ovations sound best just plugged in and go.

I just got back from church and did some a/b in'. The Martin sounds horable without the Baggs DI. But great with it. The O's sound awefule with it and great without it. Go figure. And I seem to prefer the Elite over the Legend, but they don't have the same strings on them. My string order is coming soon and I will match them up and campare them more accurately.

Bill, here's a possible reason. Your Martin has no preamp, the signal is exactly what the Baggs is looking for. The O's have a preamp, and are therefore putting out a MUCH hotter signal than the Martin. It very well may be overdriving the input on the Baggs, resulting in distortion.
On the rare occasion when I go O to DI box, I have to pad about 1/2 of the output, or it's way hot at the board. Try your O through the Baggs with the guitar preamp at the lowest possible volume and turn the gain up at the board.

You mean you're coming straight out of the back via XLR don't you? the A-jr DSP essentially has a built pre-amp, effects, EQ, Notch filter, DI box. You could actually take signal out of the effects send and use it as an effects/preamp to a line in on a mixer without amplification.

Bill, If you're at all considering an amp, you should go try one out with your Martin and see is if does the trick without the LR Baggs Pre-amp.

The baggs has a input level control so it can be adjusted. Not a distorted sound at all. Just sounds like a really really cheap guitar.

Is there anything wrong with this? I've been using a 1/4" Jack-to-A3M XLR Plug Adapter/Transformer

15 bucks at Radio Shack

Styll Yep it is amazing how nice adding that little mic is to the acoustic sound. It makes it so pro sounding! If I go back to the bigger club thing again I will run to my Acoustic Amp and Mic through to the board. I like having the Amp right behind me where I can hear it.
Ovations are great with the electrified/stage setting.
My next problem to tackle soundwise is the vocals. I am headed to "ear buttons" for singing! The guitars always sound good! Love those O's

It is the K&K Pure Western. Very nice natural sound when I use the Baggs Para Acoustic DI. I just got back from Worship Team practice and I used my Martin. And it sounded sweet. I guess I won't say any more about it. If I said I played one of my O's on the Martin group I would get all kinds of flack. But I know I won't here. that is why I am here and not there. :)

If I plug in, I just go straight to the little 30W Epiphone. I played with a little reverb and it helps sound like I'm in a concert hall.

I've used my Martins and Ovations with the Lr Baggs and both have worked fine, but my Martins also have Preamps built in. I have since changed to an Aphex Acoustic Exiter which also works great with both and doubles as a DI.

I also have preamps with my LRbaggs ribbon transducer system. The sound is very full and super hot.It also works well with the para DI.My first Taylor a 710 had a fishman with no preamp, very dead sound, but no power to back it up.With a DI box the taylor sounded much better i just never liked that guitar anyway.I payed $1,300 for it,one year later sould for $600 and have never missed it.

What about plugging the ovation into a podXt? Will the sound be ok for recording?
