These pics are now on the site: OVATION IN FRANKFURT I'm sure that Karl would be glad to make some comments about these pics. Thanks Karl, you Rock... ;) J :)

In one of the walkways between the halls there were some display cases with Ovation, Hamer and Takamine guitars. In one cabinet the guitar changed daily and on the Friday it was a contour bowl, 12-fret, slothead Custom Legend. Apparently custom made for someone called Dieter, as it had his name inlaid in the fingerboard. Very cool guitar. I took a couple of pics but they're not great due to the lighting.

(because I never test the sound myself) They just can't beat the Adamas I and II look. 1773 look clean and nice with cool slothead. Again....I envy you guy. I wish Bangkok has some G fair like this.

Joined: July 2002 Posts: 1900 | Paulmac, I have a question about the photo of Matt Smith playing the uke. There is a sunburst Ovation on the guitar stand next to him. It doesn't have the traditional rossette around the soundhole, and appears to be a shallow bowl. Which model guitar is that? Thanks for the help. Steve

That's why I liked the look of the centerhole Adamas' they made for a few years...guess I'm tired of the rossette...

Joined: July 2002 Posts: 1900 | Dave, I stand corrected. I wasn't paying much attention to what he was playing, was just interested in the sunburst O' on the guitar stand. Probably is a Pinnacle, which is a step up from a Celebrity, though I've only seen the Pinnacles on the website, it seems to be Ovation's quality overseas guitar. I guess it's still made in Japan(?)

This is actually called "Low G" tuning and is not that common. The most common is called "High G" tuning whihc simply means that instead of the G being the lowest pitch (and usually a wound string) it is one octave higher and sounds the same as 2nd string/3rd fret. There are other kinds of variations. Some sopranos are tuned 2 fret higher (ADF#B). Baritones are usually tuned DGBE (same as guitar) or FBbDG (guitar cappo'd at 3rd fret). There are special thin guage strings you can use to string a baritone up to tenor/concert pitch (GCEA) which is what I do with mine. Now, to get realy cool sounds, there are also 6 string ukes and 8 string ukes. These are almost always tenor scale. On a 6 string usually the 1st and 3rd courses are doubled. The 1st is doubled in unison and the 3rd is doubled in octave. On 8 strings, all four coutses are doubled. The 1st and 2nd are usually doubled in unison and the 3rd and 4th are doubled in octave. So there you have it. NOW you know how to tune a ukulele. Dave

When Martin introduced the Taropatch in the early part of the last century all the strings were paired in unison. The Taropatch proved not to be too popular, so Martin lost 4 strings but kept the larger body and this became the first concert sized Uke.On 8 strings, all four coutses are doubled. The 1st and 2nd are usually doubled in unison and the 3rd and 4th are doubled in octave. Dave

Joined: August 2004 Posts: 709 Location: Germany | Thanks Jerome for putting the pics on your web site. Here some of my impressions: - Of the newer models available there I especially liked the Adamas 1680. Wider neck, 12-freter, slothead, textured top and deep bowl(although the label says "contour bowl"). Sound seems to be similiar to the old Adamas I (but was very hard to hear due to background noise). - I didn't like the look of the Adamas 2080 (tear drop), it's made for a target group that is 20 years younger than me. - Collector's 2006 is an eye-catcher, nice guitar but I was not sure if I like the sound. Must try it again in a silent environment. Got also less impressions about the new preamp features. They had earphones there with a lot of reverb mixed to the guitar sound. - I observed big interest in the flame top guitars, they seem to meet the market needs. - Paul is a sport! - G-Band capo is a great stuff. Enables new sounds never heard before on a standard guitar. Karl
