Joined: March 2002 Posts: 15678 Location: SoCal | I would love to get in on the bidding on this, since I wrote the biggest freakin' check to the IRS yesterday that I have ever written (at least to them -- had to write it - I look horrible in orange jumpsuits), I am tap-city for a few months. But I'd like to find a clean early to mid 80's Legend eventually. Great guitars and the classic Ovation look......

I bought it on the 12th of April. _____ gh1

But isn't it spooky buying a 25 year old guitar without getting a chance to see if the neck is still straight as an arrow, no cracks, etc? I'm looking for a playable (and enjoyably so) 6 string to drag to lessons and such. But.. I'm a junkie for things that are unique. Is the best home for a guitar such as this one on a collector's wall somewhere or with someone like me who needs a highly usable one as well as a treasured one (or two) for out in public? Inquiring minds wanna know how you feel when you see one like this come up for sale - and what you'd be asking the seller. Let's hear it. :) TIA Sally

Ovations are one of the lowest risk guitars to buy sight unseen because they have by far the best necks and if by chance you did ever have a problem, Ovations service department is THE best in the business. The only draw back to older Ovations is that the tops sometimes crack like hell. Usually only the lacquer. So sometimes they are not the prettiest girl at the dance, but they sure do have the moves ... The 1651 in question would be a great guitar for the purpose you mentioned. To hang it on a wall would be a crime. In a strange kind of twist, it's actually the reissue that's the collectable one, not the original. Dave

What may be happening is that many people are also getting income tax RETURNS. So there's actually a lot of people out there who have some money to burn. Hmmmm ... You have some that need cash badly and have guitars, and you have on the other hand people with cash to blow, wanting a nice guitar. That sounds like a lot of guitar sales opportunities to me. (Or perhaps purchases for some)

With that deep bowl I b et it sounds great. Hey who was that new member last month who was looking to buy? I'm being a little tempted myself :)

He seems like a John Lennon groupie, so I decided to wait until closer to the end of the auction. Although the reissues are nice, I prefer the originals of most anything and I don't have the collector mentality. My collectible cars get driven every day and I try to play all my guitars every couple of days. It's getting harder to do with 9 of them.

If anyone else wants it worse than that, I'm not bidding again. I'll get in enough trouble with SWMBO. I was thinking about buying that 1537 today, too. I get in deep doo doo on these 2 guitar days. I guess this will qualify as the Legend that I'm needing to round out the collection. (Notice I didn't say "complete" or even "fill out.")
