Okay, I have deliberated over this for a couple of weeks, and finally pulled out my faithful friend and played a bit last night. I like the guitar, but am enamoured with the W597. I am not inclined to sell outright, at this point, but what I thought I would do is entertain interesting trades. This should get the juices flowing for you guys with a pot load of guitars, and since I don't NEED to sell the 1537, it is simply a matter of trading up into something I want a bit more. "Trading UP"...you read that right. I am even willing to use a little of the much coveted cash in this enterprise.

So...anyone want to play? Here is what I got. A couple of pic's in the gallery under "Cardinalflyer". This is a 1983 1537 in the natural color. The deficiencies (and I have been looking hard now), is a 1/16" dent under the low-E on the body, a finish crack in the upper third of the tail of the body. Does NOT go to the wood and appears stable (has not changed in several years). One ding in the finish on the tail of the guitar top that you can feel, but is hard to see. The wood binding is all intact, but has a rough spot or two, nothing that a quick wipe with 400 grit would eliminate. It is missing one of the maple indicators on the tone (I think). Electronics work, but occassionally are scratchy when I haven't used for a while (when bumping the cord). Original brown case that has seen some wear, but no holes or major scratches. I ordered a moly kit for the tail strap button as the hardware is not original and the hole going through is a bit larger than original, but it has a spacer and is way smaller than the moly so it is not installed. Gold plating all great, very slight dent in tip of headstock (that I never noticed until really trying to go over this in great detail). Some pick wear on the lower epulet (prior owner, I don't hit the body when I pick).

What do I want? An interesting Adamas. Something newer and unique. Prefer modern electronics, mid to deep bowl. Nothing with Melissa Ethridge's name on it and no 597/1597's as I have one already.

What I am looking for is an upgrade from my W597 which is my working guitar (if you call worship twice a week work), but I am not a collector, so old or rare, does not interest me as much.

This is how the game will be played. Evaluate how badly you want a really sweet example of a 1537, and make your pitch for your Admas + cash. No promises, no high bid thing going....if a deal hit's me as "this is the one" then hopefully we can push her through to completion. Most of you don't know me, but I have perfect ebay feedback, and am quite conservative. email me at jeffreyrdavis@yahoo.com if you want to play.... :D

***contest void where prohibited by law, must be 18 or older to play, hopefully you own the guitar your are trading and have not stolen it from your friends or guitar store, each party responsible for their own shipping, other rules apply as soon as I make them up****

Actually, this board plus ebay are interesting ways to gauge the ebb and flow as particular instruments fall in and out of favor.

A year ago, everyone wanted a 1537 and prices on ebay (if my feeble memory is correct) had broken into four figures.

Presently, it appears that the demand was relatively small and has been mostly absorbed by the guitars that examples that did sell.

In my case, only one inquiry. A fair cash offer, but not one intriguing enough for me to pull the trigger.

A similar observation on the W597 I bought in January. At that time, there would be 2 or 3 going on ebay at a time, all in the $900-$1300 range. Since then, fewer have showed up (except a new one or two in the $1800 range).

Fascinating how the Adamas lines work as compared to other brands where several examples of their current products are running all the time.

Doesn't mean anything, just an observation.....

When I'm looking the price goes up. That seems to be the rule. Once I bought my 1537 the prices seemed to drop, although I don't remember seeing any on ebay that were in as good a condition as mine.

Jeff, You make some interesting points. Let me take that another step ...

In my 4+ years here at the OFC, both in a previous life and in my current reincarnation I've observed the following trends (in my opinion).

1. 4 years ago along with the X and A braced early guitars, the 1537 and later the FD14 were the creme-de-la-creme in Ovation acoustic sound. To be honest the LX guitars have largely closed the gap. FD14 is still top dog in the kennel but buyers now have some real alternatives in the LX line.

2. A number of Ovation faithful (including myself) have also come to appreciate non-Ovation guitars. Many have come out of the closet and into the box, so to speak. Samova, BrianT, Playadamas and some dude named Standingovation, to name just a few. I never in a million years dreamed I would ever hold anything except lyrachord against my belly. But my eyes and ears were opened and now I not only appreciate different flavors of icecream, but even different icecream sellers.

3. The Adamas line, in my opinion, at the turn of the century was in a funk. No real personality just a bland array of SMT CVT stuff that was difficult for me to even associate with the Adamas name. But they blew the doors open with the U681 and the export textured tops. Then the reissues of the real Adamas guitars, now the great new models like the 2080. It's like they have taken the best of the old and the best of the new.

So the result of all this, plus an amazing array or great offerings from taylor, Martin, Collings, etc. have left the buyer with more choices than ever before. This naturally diminishes the ferver for any one particular model (probably with the exception of the 47RI and the FD14). Somebody who really knows a 1537 and really wants one will pay good money. But probably the days of people standing in line just to say they own one are winding down.

Just my feeble opinions.

Dave

If I had a closet full of guitars like Dave does, I'd never come out.

Yup. And when I'm selling, that's when prices tend to bottom out.

Jeff, if you let me know when you're selling your CL, then, I'll pretend I'm not looking.
