Hi,

just received my new U681T a few days ago, thought I'd share that with you as I did when I bought my FD14.

This is an amazing sounding guitar, I can only second what Tony said recently about the surround sound!
It is a loud little guitar with lots of basses (too much?). Very easy to play.
To be honest I was not as impressed when I first played it as I was with the FD14. Maybe I expected too much.
But it blew me away when I played plugged!

Cheers,
Tom

The UTE makes a great companion for the FD14. You have several excellent guitars to keep you busy.

What is a U681T and a FD14; trying to come to grips with all the different models!

G'Day Hobie. I'm still trying to come to grips with a lot of things, but Dave's site at

www.ovationgallery.com

and Jerome's at

www.ovationtribute.com

are great references with all the pictures.

Tom,

The Ute is a killer. When I first got my FD14 i was dissapointed, but when i found the right strings, it clicked.I love it to death....

The Ute was gorgeous right out of the box to my ear... so, look for those strings that will make it sing to your ear.

No question (in my mine) that the Ute is a more Dynamic and rangey instrument than the FD14. They are really different creatures.

The FD has a very mellow tone. Probably from the cedar top. Ute is loud and crisp. This is from about a 5 minute tryout of each of Dave's, so probably not worth much. Both were very easy players.

I have Adamas 1818E strings on both guitars, I'll try elyxir or D'addario next time.

What are the best strings for you Jeff?

The 1818's are some of the best "middle of the road" strings around, and unless you are looking for something specific in the sound, I would stick with them, D'add EJ-16's or another good set of un-coated Phosphor-Bronze light guage set. Lighter sets *may* bring out more harmonic overtones on the U681T. Mediums really don't do much because the top is so active already. Opinion are like belly butons, your result may vary, Have fun on the quest for "perfect strings" :D :p

Tom,
Try the Elixir Phos Bronze Custom lights.

Jeff W., I know the cedar Balladeer and the FD14 are vastly different animals, but I recently put on a set of D'addario EXP 80/20 bronze lights and changed to a light gauge pick. This really brightened the tone of the cedar top.

TWA,
Makes pefect sense.

On my FD14, I want a deep, mellow tone and loud volume as it is the guitar I play for Old Time in which the guitar is used for an almost percusive drum-like rhythm.

My suggestion to Tom to try-out the Elixir Phos Bronze Custom Lights is to Lighten up the Bass a bit while keeping the sparkly highs.

Jeff, those are the strings that I use on my FD14, and I agree with your assessment.

I tried the 1818's on the FD-14 but didn't like the tone. The EJ16's are much warmer and they "feel" right on the guitar. Exact opposite on the U-681T however, the EJ16's sounded dull and old, whereas the 1818's sounded bright.

Just weird the differences a set of strings can make
