I have run into a 60's Penney's archtop guitar with a DeArmond FHC pickup w/case, that I may be able to buy. I know it's absolutely pre-1971 by the Penney logo. It looks like this was stored in a case under the bed for the last 40 years as the pickup looks like it just came out of the box and the sunburst guitar (probably made by Kay) is practically flawless. It plays fine, and actually sounds great, even with ancient strings. Anyone have any thoughts on it's value? I think I can get it pretty cheap.

Didn't Harmony produce some of these under various department store brand names?

I think the pickup alone is worth more than $150. Here is one one the bay that is incomplete and a little beat with 3 days to go before the end of the auction. This one is complete and mint. The pickup is an "add on" and not pemanently installed on the body. I'll keep an eye on it.

Those pickups can go for really stupid money, several hundred dollars. Stupid because they are, by current standards piss-poor pickups. But they have the "vintage mojo" and that's what counts in the vintage gear market. There's a fine line between something that's vintage and something that is long past it's best. Buy it and put the profit into something good instead of something that's just old.

Thanks. I appreciate the input. Obviously, some people will pay a good price for them - not that I would buy one for my own use.
