The outer shell is mucc more resilient than the 8217(which is made in China as a cheaper alternative to the TKL). The shell on the Chinese case is very brittle, and there is a space between the shell and the styrofoam. Every time I put the case down on a hard surface(IE:the parking lot so I could open the car door) a little crack would show up at the contact point. After a few months, the case had cracks all over! Hardware and overall solid/plush materials make for the 91170 to be much better protection for our Ovations and much harder to damage the case itself. As a bonus, you get a trussrod wrench with a built-in holder and that white Ovation logo inside the 91170. REALLY worth the xtra $ IMHO. John <>{

I curious if anyone has an opinion concering the different companies that make ovation cases. So far I know of TKL and SKB. I like how my SKB case looks, it's more "curvy" than the TKL case. Don't know if it's of better quality, though. The tag says it was manufactured "south of the border".

I get TKL cases for my old Nationals all the time (when I get an ebay wonder without a case). They're great. Don't have that much experience with SKB.

I have a friend who does just that, and when she goes out she uses a sturdy gig bag. Works great for her. Speaking of gig bags, I've been informed by reliable sources that the upgraded tribal planet GX-40 bags will be availble in the US in January.
