Joined: April 2003 Posts: 2503 Location: Fayetteville, NC | Since Fathers Day is coming up Sunday I thought i'd post a tribute to my dad. My Dad is without a doubt the best friend I have or have ever had. While we've had our disagreements from time to time as all children and parents do, He has always amazed me with his unconditional Love and support. My Dad bought me my First guitar -an Epiphone acoustic that I learned to play on. He then helped me get my First Ovation, a Glen Campbell 12 string. Through the last several months while taking a training job in dispatch- My dad has helped us stay afloat hoping that once the training was finished the pay scale would go up and it would all pay off. Then when I Was let go he sent money to help us out while I was looking for a job. On June 2nd I was at Trinity Mother Francis HospitalIn Tyler, Texas at 6:00am talking with my dad in the pre-op area before he was wheeled off to have open heart surgury. We talked about a sermon he preached a number of years ago titled Superman! The sermon started off with the story of how when he was a young boy he tied a flour sack around his neck and climbed up into the tallest area of the old hay and tractor barn. He was going to fly.... Everyone knows what happened of course but to hear him tell that tale and then proceed to make a sermon around it was just fantastic memory.I learned a Guy Clarke song in honor of my Dad and that memory many years ago .. so Dad..even though you're still in Texas on that respirator in Intensive Care... I love you.. This is for you.. Eight years old with a flour sack cape Tied all around his He climbed up on the garage Figurin' what the heck He screwed his courage up so tight The whole thing came unwound He got a runnin' start and bless his heart He headed for the ground CHORUS: Well he's one of those who knows that life Is just a leap of faith Spread your arms and hold your breath And always trust your cape All grown up with a flour sack cape Tied all around his dreams He's full of piss and vinegar He's bustin at the seams He licked his finger and checked the wind It's gonna be do or die He wasn't scared of nothin', Boys He was pretty sure he could fly CHORUS Well he's one of those who knows that life Is just a leap of faith Spread your arms and hold your breath And always trust your cape Old and grey with a flour sack cape Tied all around his head He's still jumpin' off the garage And will be 'till he's dead All these years the people said He's actin like a kid He did not know he could not fly So he did CHORUS Well he's one of those who knows that life Is just a leap of faith Spread your arms and hold your breath And always trust your cape Happy Fathers Day Daddy! And Happy Fathers Day To all Fathers everywhere. Sorry for the long post. it's just something I wanted to do for the last few days, and seemed like the right time.

It's funny how sometimes a song or a post can say the things you've been meaning to say but never quite got out. my family is all praying and crossing our fingers for his complete recovery.I got to sing the song for him about 8 years ago. I changed the word gararge out for Ole barn to better match his original jump! :)

However, I almost waited too long to mend some fences. I became best friends with him when I was 34. He died when I was 39. My first father's day without a father is the first father's day I celibrate as a father. My children never met this wonderful man.

I was thinking this morning about My dad Talking about trying to help me get a 6 string Ovation once my Job situation had straightened out and he got his surgury out of the way. He's always trying to come up with ways to encourage the guitar playing. he remebers when i had Three Guitars including one electric and he loved the Home studio setup i once had.he knows how much i love my 12 string ovation and always said i wanted a 6 string to be able to swap off. His thought was that maybe i could use them to gig and make extra money. We talked about how a decent sound sytem to gig with was becoming more affordable(he loves seeing those powered mixing steups, and remembers the days when you had to make major investments to be able to play music even in churches)I'm sure he had no idea that he was going to end up with still in intensive care almost three weeks after the surgury) In talking with my mom this morning they don't know whether Dad's job will hold out or if he'll be forced to retire. He had said he wanted to work for atleast 5 more years if he could.of course his recovery is what is most important to me. Happy Fathers Day

We are all influenced greatly by our Fathers' lessons. Even if it's from their mistakes, we should be thankful that they made them for us so we can choose whatever path we wish.
