Hi Gang,

Well, I have my Redwood back from the mothership, and I've learned two major things thus far in this adventure...

1) As everybody here has said time and time again, the crew back at the mothership are flippin' amazing! The bridge pulled up on this guitar originally and destroyed the top in the process, meaning the top and bowl had to be replaced. So rather than having them restore it to it's original splendor, I asked them to supe it up a bit with inlaid epaulets, x-bracing, and an OP-Pro with XLR. A special thanks to John Budny for putting up with my stupid questions and turning out a dream guitar! The only thing original left on this guitar is the neck, and they worked it up so nice I didn't even recognize it at first!

2) It is apparently impossible to ship this guitar from the Northeast to the Northwest via UPS Ground without something bad happening. That's right, they did it again! Uggh! Somewhere between New Hartford and here, a 1/2" x 1/4" triangular section of the finish delaminated right above the bridge! Unfortunately, it's going to have to go back to CT one more time to get refinished! Unbelievable! Oh well, I've made the arrangements with John, but I'm going to keep it and play it for a while first, and I will have it to pass around at the PNW OFC party.

Anyway, here's a shot of it.. beautiful new figured redwood top.. more pics in my gallery..

I'm looking forward to seeing it and playing it next month. Your shipping stories scare me. I have never had a problem, but the Ute is in transit as we speak. I wonder where they got the figured Redwood for the top. I thought it was all used up.

Mark, it'll have to come via air from Alaska, so I suspect your fine. I think it's several days on trains between here and the NE that are causing me probs. Good question on the top.. thought it was the Koa they were all out of. I assume they keep some of each rare top in reserve for repairs.

I thought I read a long time ago that they didn't make as many redwood collectors as they intended because they ran out of the figured redwood. Might have just been a rumor or I could have imagined it.
As far as shipping an Adamas, I suspect the graphite is less likely to have temperature or humidity problems than a wood topped guitar wood have.

How's the sound with the X bracing compare with the old A braced top?

Moody, wish I could tell ya.. I hadn't really had a chance to play it much before the bridge pulled on it.

It had old strings and a 5-year-old top so I would describe it as loose and comfortable sounding, with plenty of low end. I put new strings on it and went to bed.. woke up the next morning and it wouldn't stay in tune as the back of the bridge gained altitude.

Now with the new top and strings it feels quite a bit tighter but it's still got those earthy undertones.

Too many variables involved to say how the bracing plays into it. Ask again after the pros get their hands on it at the party.. I don't have much to compare it to.

It would be a new, old-style bowl...not a GS bowl. They still have all the KBar era stuff and were making some old-style guitars on the tour.
What a brilliant idea to have them do this! That's a guitar for life.

everyone that I sold one of these guitars to I told to detune after every use and use a humidifier. redwood is beautiful and sounds great but is fickle.

I'm the farthest thing from a pro that you could imagine, but I'd love to play it and listen to everyone else play it. I hope to bring something to compare it to. I probably won't bring my 99 Collector's, though, which is the closest thing I have to the Redwood in terms of looks.
