I happened upon a very portable lap top speaker system earlier this week.

Edifier 300

It fits in a padded case slightly smaller than a "3 Ring" binder. Two golf ball sized tweeters and a tube-shaped sub-woofer, about the same length and 1/3rd larger diameter as an empty paper towel role.

When it comes to (truely) portable speakers there are always trade offs; size, sound, price, convenience, power supply, yatta yatta yatta...

... this little system is VERY GOOD. For about half the price (80bucks) of many of the highend/ most portable systems, this is only slightly larger and completey blows them away in sound quality.

When we went on th'Cruz back in Feb (jeez! it was THAT long ago??), our neighbor had loaned us one of these units:
Altec

Pretty sweet!
Ran on a couple "AA's", small, lightweight, and put out enough sound for a cabin full o' party people, or allowed two people to drown-out the sound of ill-mannered children without infringing on the privacy of your deck-chair neighbors . . .

Ya know - this just happens to be perfect timing for this discussion (for me anyway). Lady Weaser is a dance/pilates/yoga/pretty much anything that will keep you healthy instructor (and, yes, I have failed them all), holds classes in a lot of local spots and has asked me to find a small mp3 player speaker unit that is portable, somewhat powerful (a typical workout room (from what I've heard) is about 15 x 20 or so but keep in mind you're filling that with 10 -20 grunting, um, ladies) and has good to very good sound.

I've heard some of the iPod units and they seem a little shy on power. Thoughts? Comparisons?

Weeze,
I bought the 'Edifier 300' only because it blows away all the "notebook-and-less-size" portable systems. It's true. It fits in my brief case

If Lady Weaser wants a truely KICK-ASS portable...
Mick Fleetwood Model 12

...This comes in a PelicanCase which functions as a Bitch'n SubWoofer AND storage case for an active amp and two FUCKING KILLER satellites. The PelicanCase is about the size of a brief case...

(....I charge my clients $150 to rent this unit instead of marginal Conference Center Sound Systems at twice the price...)

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER. PERIOD.

I've heard that Fleetwood Model 12 and like Jeff said, for the money it KICKS ASS!

It would be PERFECT for Lady Weeze and what she wants to use it for.
