Hi

I am interested to know how often people change their strings. I have heard different stories or opinions, and imagine I will hear more.

I play on average about 2 hours or more a day.

Some say every week, some months. I know Elixir are meant to be good for a lot longer, but he fraying and dirt build up on the fret area was a problem for me.

Hobie,
I think you'll find it varries alot with different players. I change my string about every 2 weeks. They start causing problems with tunning and sound dull. Some of the guys on the board change their strings every day, Al never changes his. Alot depends on the acidity of your body, the humidity and weather you eat fried chicken and onion rings while you play. I don't like coated strings either. hey sound like 2 week old strings from the get-go.

My Sentiments Exactly.

Hey ChatMan;
Last night I put those WebStrings y'sent me (ThxAgain) on both my GigGuitars. Gig T'nite, so I'll letcha' know how they hold up.

First Impressions:

The 6-sting set (BlueGrass): I like that the D/G strings are bit heftier than my norm, as I tend to break either of those two first. The overall acoustic sound didn't have that bright "chimey" sound that I like and have come to expect from a new set o'strings, but the guitar'll be "plugged-in" tonight anyway, so . . . SoWhat??

The 12-string set (Lights): Again, I like the fact that they got a bit more "heft" than my norm (especially on the bass-side of things). My Legend-12 is a ssb, so it has a tendancy of sounding a bit "thin". They might add a bit of 'nads to the sound.

I'll let you know how things work out.

ThanksAgain!!!

(Oh . . . btw, the SpicedNuts were EXCELLENT!!! . . . you should post a link here . . . ;-)

If you play them several hours a day and wipe them down often, they're basically dead in a few weeks...depending on the tuning. These days I tune down to D or C standard, use med-lights and they seem to last a little longer...(and coated strings are just 'duller longer'...)

LeStrangely enough, ;-)

They're the next set "on deck".

Awhile ago, I paid a vist to the old shop in Jersey where I got my first Ovation, and the now-owner touted these strings highly and gave me a set to try . . . I just haven't gotten around to it (yet). I might try 'em on the SlotHead.

Hey! . . . they're made in Jersey . . . 'dey GOTTA be good!!

Though I think on electrics they last a bit longer, because the tone seems to come from the pick-ups a bit more....so changing strings all the time on solid bodies doesn't seem to be a huge change for me.

However, with acoustics I change them every few weeks if I happen to be playing them alot.

When I'm playing and I all of a sudden get a huge urge to buy a new guitar cause I want a different sound... I change the strings and save myself a grand!

Well that's a variety of reasons, enough to almost excuse any behaviour regarding strings. So I can be changing or not changing them at any old time as there is a reason for it all.

Thanks for the comments

Change them as often as your ears and pocketbook can stand it.

When the tone just doesn't have that 'zing' it used to. If you bend a lot, when the bottoms of the wound strings get worn past the windings to the core.

IF you're cheap like me. The second time the g string breaks, or if I have the cash, sooner.

If you play out. A couple days before a gig. Avoid changing the day of the gig as it takes a couple days for the strings to settle in and stop stretching. If you play nylons,... A week before the gig, still be prepared to tune the e string up after each song.

If the grunge on the fretboard are unbearable. Change them. (you might wanna not eat peanutbudder and jelly sandwiges whilest playing ;) )
