Hi, this is a first post from me so I will give a little background. An Ovation owner since 1976 ( a balladeer ) recently ,reluctantly sold to help purchase a 1998 Adamas 1687. My god what a difference!! only problem is, when I plug in to my Laney valve amp the tuner lights seem to be going through some kind of programmed routine and then the pre amp switches its self off with a loud click.I have installed a new battery and tried various knob twiddling but cannot suss it  .Does anybody have an idea what is going on, any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the OFC, denwal!

1687's are fantastic guitars. Should have the Optima tuner. Are you plugging in using the 1/4" or the XLR?

That little phrase gave notice of your general location before your profile could.
I don't have your answer but you can be sure someone here will.

Could be component failure in the preamp. Try talking to the service dept at JHS.

www.jhs.co.uk

If you bought the guitar used it won't be covered under warranty, but they have replacement preamps. If they insist you go through a dealer drop me an email, I have an account with them through my business and can order spares for you.

Could this be a manifestation of the preamp not recognizing phantom power due to XLR ground connections?

If not already, try using 1/4 inch to your amp. If already doing this, listen to Temp. ignore me.

Does the preamp only do this with a jack plugged in, or can you use the tuner normally when there's no cable plugged in?

Thanks for the great response all of you. i have only used the 1/4 jack socket,I didn't even know that you could operate the tuner just on the battery alone!! so much for all those years having a model 1111 non electric. When I used the tuner unpluged, after a short time the green light flashes and then the unit shuts down, probably to save battery power? am I right on this. If I plug in to the amp it is again shutting down, this does sound like PT's explaination could be right. I'll contact JWS tommorrow and come back. regards

The tuner has an auto-off function. From memory it shuts down after about 1 minute, but should not shut down the preamp at the same time.

This sounds something like a dirty/bad connector in the plug. This is exactly the behavior I got when I had an Optima plugged in using an incompatible XLR. when I turned the tuner on, the preamp would work until the tuner turned off. For this to happen using the 1/4 inch I think might just be dirty contacts that sense the presence of the plug.

Dirty contacts sounds right.

Also sounds like Jeff's address book.
