So (as a father of 4) I would recommend the cheapest thing you could find at a department store that resembles a guitar well. At 3 he's likely to destroy it and you'll be replacing it often. On the other hand, you'll quickly discover if he loses interest without investing much. I DO think its a good idea do expose children to music (especially GOOD Guitar music :) Those sounds will absorb into there little brains and effect musical development. Dr. Vince

Before that I had a bunch of ukes, a mickey mouse guitar, lone ranger guitar, maccaferri plastic guitar etc. I never really learned on any of those but it was fun to hold while watching American Bandstand

If it doesn't look like what you're playing, it won't be as desireable. 3. It should be tuneable. Some of these toys in stores are just that. If you can at least tune it and show him where to put his fingers to make the same sound you can make, he will be more likely to keep at it. I wanted to play guitar as long as I could remember. In 1st grade (7 or8?) I begged my father to get me a guitar so I could take lessons at school. My parents didn't have money so he came home with this beat up piece of crap that could have come from the dump for all I know now. But back then it looked real cool! (red western w/white pickguard oohh!)The teacher told my dad it was unplayable, and I wouldn't be able to learn anything on it. Dad returned (or got rid of) the guitar and DIDN'T get me another one!!!!!! EVER!!!!! I was only a kid, and they thought it was a phase that would go away. One Christmas (14 or 15) I got mom to splurge on a cheap department store Harmony that made my fingers bleed. It was wrapped and under the tree for a week. She wouldn't let me play it because she thought I would bore of it quickly. I used to open the paper with a razor blade, play it when everyone was sleeping then slip the triangular box back in the wrapping paper. Every night for a week!! If a child shows interest, encourage him. If I had been playing since age 7, who knows what a virtuoso I'd be now!
