Y'aar indeed.

You lubbers need to get yersel's to this fair Isle, where StoneChase will be partying hard in a local hostelry. The Grog is good, and there will be plenty of hornpipes to jig to, me hearties!

(translation available on request!)

Clearly, very few of you will be able to make the gig, so it's not so much publicity in this post, just a laugh. Here\'s a link to a picture if you fancy a laugh - I'm the one in the hat. I didn't have a parrot available for the photoshoot, so it's a stuffed Moose on my shoulder...

Hoping to be in that outfit for work on Friday!

"IMO, every day should be talk like a pirate day!"

Now yer sails be pullin clean and yar! Get ready with some tactile observances to put an edge on yer blade and keep ya from foul'in yer rigging:

When driving - prior to making a turn, holler "coming about to the port" or "Pulling starboard now".

If you get on an elevator with others and they want to know which floor a good "Main Deck", "Mizzen", "Poop Deck" or "Galley" should suffice.

Those that just don't get it should be referred to as "Daft" or "Scally-wags".

And for no apparent reason a good "Arrrrrh" should punctuate the office air.

For the advanced, learn how to tell the time of day by the Bells, i.e., Noon is 4 bells.

I've played the part of a pirate in about a half dozen different productions of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. My favorite line (adlibbed, of course) was "Thems that die, they be the lucky ones!"

The swagger’in First Mate of the Jolly Oyster came down to the pier to commandeer a scuttle to take him back aboard to sleep off a night spent in port. With his good eye he spies a dinghy tied up to the pier. He clambers over and in with each step teeter’in on disaster until finally he is in the boat.

He pulls the oars and sets out to his vessel think’in only of another cup of rum and a days nap. “Cra-a-ack” and one of his oars break off! “Yarrrrgh, I’ll be a barnacle’s beard”! So he takes up his remaining oar and starts to paddle riverman style.

“Cra-a-a-c-c-k” goes the other oar”

“Blast ye confounded pile of kindling”!

Stupified and awash in wonder he looks about for some way out of his predicament. He soon spies the ship’s captain rowing in with two ladies in his boat.

“Ahoy me Cap’n”, “Would ye be so kind as to lend me one of yer oars when your done with em”?

“Blast ya all to a well digger’s hell! This be my dear Mother and her sister”!

“Ya-a-a-a-a-ar-r-r-r-rgh!

I reccomend getting a copy of "Pirate Hunter" by Richard Zacks. It's a biography of Capt.(John) Kidd.
Kidd was actually commisioned a ship & given papers to go out and HUNT pirates. He basically got f@cked over by "Corporate"(EastIndiaTradingCompany) and the Crown, got a bunch of bad publicity and was branded a "pirate". He eventually turned himself in because his wife & daughter were disposessed of their home & forced to live in abject poverty. Before surrendering, it's believed that he MAY have hidden whatever valuables his ship had acquired on either LongIsland or Connecticut (get the shovel out, Beal!!) as a "bargaining chip". Didn't work. He was shipped back to England, spent a sh!tload of time in a dungeon, given a "trial" and was executed in the fashion that was reserved for pirates. Interesting read, indeed.

I'm currently reading "Dangerous Waters" that deals with modern-day piracy that is STILL going on in the waters off Africa and SouthEast Asia. Pretty scary stuff. It's pretty unbelievable that this stuff goes on and is SO "commonplace" in these regions . . . and due to the massive amounts of "red tape", time/money involved, will go "unreported". Entire cargo ships & tankers (and their crews) will often just "disappear" and oft-times is easier to just "forget about it" . .

Actually I've been in that part of world with pirates, in the South China sea off the coast of Borneo where it points towards the phillipines. If you venture out, and stay at an island, your boatman would sleep next to the boat to prevent it from being stolen. Interesting fact ... we get the word Boogeyman from the Bugis of Indonesia in Sulawasi, who are/were notorious pirates.

In Dm / C ...

What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning?
Chorus:
Way hay and up she rises
Patent blocks o' diff'rent sizes,
Way hay and up she rises
Earl-aye in the morning

1. Sling him in the long boat till he's sober,
2. Keep him there and make 'im bale 'er.
3. Pull out the plug and wet him all over,
4. Take 'im and shake 'im, try an' wake 'im.
5. Trice him up in a runnin' bowline.
6. Give 'im a taste of the bosun's rope-end.
7. Give 'im a dose of salt and water.
8. Stick on 'is back a mustard plaster.
9. Shave his belly with a rusty razor.
10. Send him up the crow's nest till he falls down,
11. Tie him to the taffrail when she's yardarm under,
12. Put him in the scuppers with a hose-pipe on him.
13. Soak 'im in oil till he sprouts flippers.
14. Put him in the guard room till he's sober.
15. Put him in bed with the captain's daughter*). (She does things she shouldn't oughta
16. Take the Baby and call it Bo'sun.
17. Turn him over and drive him windward.
18. Put him in the scuffs until the horse bites on him.
19. Heave him by the leg and with a rung console him.
20. That's what we'll do with the drunken sailor.

Who'll make his mark
The Captain cried
To the Devil drink a toast
We'll glut the hold
With cups of gold
And we'll feed the sea with ghosts
I see your hunger for a fortune
Could be better
Served beneath my flag
If you've the stomach
For a broadside
Come aboard my pretty boys
I will take you and make you
Everything you've ever dreamed

Make fast the guns tonight we sail
When the high tide floods the bay
Cut free the lines
And square the yards
Get the black flag stowed away
The Turk the Arab and the Spaniard
Will soon have pennies on their eyes
And any other laden fancy
We will take her by surprise
I will take you and make you
Everything you've ever dreamed

Six days off the Cuban coast
When a sail ahead they spied
A Galleon of the treasure fleet
The mizzen lookout cried
Closer to the wind my boys
The mad eyed Captain roared
For every man that's alive tonight
Will be hauling gold aboard

Spare us the galleon begged
But mercy's face had fled
Blood ran from the screaming souls
The cutlass harvested
Driven to the quarter deck
The last survivor fell
She's ours my boys
The Captain grinned
And no one left to tell

The Captain rose from a silk divan
With a pistol in his fist
And shot the lock from an iron box
And a blood red ruby kissed
I give you jewelry of turquoise
A crucifix of solid gold
One hundred thousand silver pieces
It is just as I foretold
You, you see there before you
Everything you've ever dreamed

Anchored in an indigo moonlit bay
Gold eyed 'round fires
The sea thieves lay
Morning, white shells
And a pipe of clay
As the wind filled their footprints
They were far, far away

Our sails swell full
As we brave all seas
On a westward wind
To live as we please
With the wicked wild eyed woman
Of portobello town
Where we've been told
That a purse of gold
Buys any man a crown
They will serve you and clothe you
Exchange your rags
For the velvet coats of kings

Who'll drink a toast with me
I give you liberty
This town is ours - tonight

Landlord wine
And make it the finest
Make it a cup for a sea dogs thirst
Two long years of bones and beaches
Fever and leeches did their worst
So fill the night with paradise
Bring me peach and peacock
'Till I burst
But first, I want a soft touch
In the right place
I want to feel like a king tonight
Ten on the black
To beat the Frenchman
Back you dogs
Give them room to turn
Now open wide sweet Heavens gate
Tonight were gonna
See if Heaven burns
I want an angel on a gold chain
And I'll ride her to the stars
It's the last time
For a long, long time
Come the daybreak we embark
On the flood of the morning tide
Once more the ocean cried

This company will return one day
Though we feel your tears
It's the price we pay
For there's prizes to be taken
And glory to be found
Cut free the chains
Make fast your souls
We are Eldorado bound
I will take you
For always, forever, together
Until Hell calls our names

Who'll drink a toast with me
To the Devil and the deep blue sea
Gold drives a man to dream

Oh, the year was 1778,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
A letter of marque came from the king,
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen,

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She'd a list to the port and and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

On the King's birthday we put to sea,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
We were 91 days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

On the 96th day we sailed again,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders we made to fight

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Yankee lay low down with gold,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Then at length we stood two cables away,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

So here I lay in my 23rd year,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
It's been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.
