This is not a 9.5 of 10 but should be a great player and for $296.06, including high shipping ($49.95).

Anniversary

AAA spruce, A brace - basically a Custom Legend without the abalone; the crack will be almost impossible to see with a couple of hours work.

Just couldn't let it go...with about 10 minutes to go, at $208.

Congrats Tony, I was watching that one. Hope the crack at the neck is an easy repair, but an overhaul should have that thing beautiful.

I saw that one, too, but figured if I got that one, I couldn't justify a 30th Anniversary Collector's next year.

Good get. I saw that one but decided to pass ... I didn't like the way the shaved ear on the headstock looked and the binding up near the neck looks sorta funky. And the last thing I need right now is another Ovation.

I'v always wanted one of those. I almost bought one, but decided on the Custom Legend instead. Now kinda wish I'd gotten the Ann. because CLs are a dime a dime a dozen now, and these are relatively scarce in minty shape. I also like the extra laminate pieces under the headstock, and at the base of the neck heel.

I'm sorry if I'm offending anybody here, but I have always thought that the Anniversary model was one of the more ugly Ovations ever built.

At great risk to my reputation (as if?) I have to say I never understood what was the attraction of this Anniversary model. I know its hard to talk about someone elses funny looking kids or how stupid their dog is without getting pummelled.

I am glad that there is a lot to choose from. I do like it when O carves the bridge. They should do more handcraft stuff!

It would have to be the herringbone binding. ;) Only real guitars have herringbone.

I don't wish to offend either--or hijack a thread by bringing up an entirely different guitar--but since Moody opened the "Pandora's Box" as it were, I think the ugliest guitar Ovation ever made public was the Deacon Ltd... Gawd, I've wanted to say that for years!!!

I know folks that own 'em love 'em, and they seem to be somewhat desireable among collectors, but to me they look like Breadwinners that got too close to the fire and melted. They remind me of that disfigured red Strat on the cover of Eric Clapton's "Money & Cigarettes" album.

Again, no offense to the Deacon Ltd. owners that may read this, it's just my opinion, and it's only in referrence to aesthetics, not tone or playability.

I do know 10th Anniversary Model. The great sound especially my 1979 Anniversary 1157. But I don't like the carved bridge and truss rod like that. Lovely snowflake inlays!

Nice guitar Tony!
The first ones were the red colour. Towards the end they also offered a natural. I think the red looks the best.

Update on the $296 Anniversary...

Got it in Friday, from the condition of the box (not UPS, just old banged up box) and condition of case - worry, concern, anger...yet, left it to allow it to cool down.

A couple of pics from the auction:

First picture (disclosed in discription) - easy to clean out, seal, will be almost invisible...only crack on top. No damage around the heal where impact could have caused the top crack. Top has a couple of indentions not breaking the finish where it hit a mike or whatever...hard to see.

Neck and headstock are excellent; nice low setup, no chips, or dings. Frets are very good.

Only question I had (not disclosed) and anticipated was damage to headstock - small chip off of headstock; interesting, even though gloss finish and it was bare wood where they sanded it, a little matte (non gloss) nail polish and it looks like factory finish. Actually like the angle, will take the other undamaged side down - will be very attractive.

One area where finish is chipped off binding - again, matte finish did the trick. Same for a small portion of the ivory binding, a small layer chipped off...leveled it with CyA, then matte nail polish. Challenge anyone to find it if they didn't know where to look.

Case will be thrown out - interior good but the case exterior...well, forget it. Good protection but it needs to be retired. Case will end up in the Miramar dump.

Delivered...maybe a 7 of 10. Now, for its age, at least a 8.5 or 9. After the crack is repaired, this is a real keeper

Satisfied, definately yes. If it had gone higher, it would have been returned to seller. I knew what was probably wrong with it and would have limited my bid accordingly.

Restrung, battery and WOW...aged top, AAA spruce, A brace, great neck. Bottom line, there is a lot you can do to an older guitar to bring it back from the years of play.

Got any chips or cuts on the top of the headstock? Takes a little time but do a little, then a little later, etc., until it is built up. Buff it and the chips are gone.

My apologies to Al and other dealers but this was to emphasize that there are wonderful older Ovations out there that can be easily brought back...with the catalyzed polyester finish, easy to work with them. For a few dollars, one of the best guitars I have.
