I picked up the head only version of the vintage valve jr about a month ago and have recommended it to several buddies. Great stuff for the money!

I had a studio call for a boy-band thing a couple of weeks ago. I used the Valve Jr combo for a lap steel solo. I found 2 things completely ridiculous. One that the engineer kept asking me to turn down a 5 watt amp, even though it was in a booth, and secondly that I found myself playing lap steel on a boy-band pop record.

That pretty much white-washes Stephen's "AirSupply" indiscretion....

I bought the combo version (for $88 at a GC sale) a little while ago and was somewhat disappointed with the sound. I invested $25 in a new set of tubes and what a difference that made! The power tube that came in the amp was defective, so the new tube fixed that up. Also, I think that the Tungsol 12AX7 pre-amp tube I bought is a whole lot more responsive than the stock tube. The amp now sounds incredible. I even think that my Legend with the OP Pro sounds really nice through this amp. It's kinda hard to find fault with this thing for the price. I'd recommend it to anyone. The only thing is that the quality control on the tubes is poor. If you get one and it sounds OK, then you got lucky with the tubes. Otherwise start by replacing the pre-am tube, then the power tube. That should fix it.

One last thing. Epiphone has modified the combo version to cut down the hum at idle. The head version already has this mod. If you are looking for a combo make sure that is has only two black stripes on the face at the top and not the three stipes in the middle of the face, which is the older version.

This is definitely one cool amp.
