I am thinking a lot about getting a new ovation and wondering what people here think about the 1769-ADII model.
I have an old Ovation Baladeer that has served me well but it is old and the electronics don't work anymore.
I recently picked up a beautiful Alvarez acoustic which sound really great plugged in but it just doesn't have that low action that my ovation has.
So the thing I am looking for is the low action and a guitar that sounds great played through an acoustic amplifier.
I would appreciate any comments from people here who either own one of these or have played one.

I have an old Balladeer and an AD-II.
I've had the DiMeola for almost a couple years now. Awesome guitar. Ovation's top of the line wood topped instrument. I have the action set crazy low. No problems.

Location: Chicago | I bought a new ADII (black) a year ago. I absolutely LOVE the physical guitar, the playability and its somewhat gentler acoustic sound. It's simply the most beautiful Ovation, IMHO. But plugged in, I still prefer my old '74 Legend (with Fishman electronics). Similarly, I think my bandmate Jeff's older Elite sounds stronger plugged in than does HIS 1769 ADII. My best advice is that you decide on an amp and test drive a Legend, a Balladeer, etc. against the AD 1769. There are players who SWEAR by the sound and features of the AL DiMeola. You may very well be one: A great deal depends on what you plan to do with it. No two ways about it: the new bracing, the booster button, the tuner, the onboard EQ, the OP PRO preamp and the various appointments (e.g. abalone inalys) are superb.
If you check the tunes our sites (below) you will hear Jeff and myelf playing the Elite and 74 Legend, respectively. I play through a Fishman Loudbox and Crate Acoustic (in stereo); Jeff plays through two 75 watt studion power monitors |

Location: New Jersey | Test drive sounds like a good idea. I haven't seen this guitar in any music stores around here though. I'm in North Jersey. Lots of big music stores around, but none carrying the Al Dimeola Signature.
Anyone know where I can get my hands on one of these for a test drive?

Have you tried Robbie's on 46 in Totowa??
I haven't been in there in couple years, but the last time I was, they had a pretty considerable selection of USA Ovations (a LOT more than GuitarCenter accross the street).
Richie's Music in Rockaway HAD a good Ovation selection at one time, but my last visit there was "CelebrityCity".
Nothing at Victor's, eh??
(I haven't been there in YEARS.)
I hope y'can find one to "try", but I would heartily agree that when you want to "buy", contact Al at LostArt . . . he'll treat you right. |

Location: SoCal | I know for a fact that Al has a NEW one!!
They are hard to find, especially a new one. About a year and a half ago, we were trying to find one for Jim Nikas who was playing with Serge. John Budny told him that unless he could find one hanging around a store, it would take 4-5 months. Bottom line, consider it a special order.
So, as a favor, I sold mine (used) to him.
This is a new, full warranty. |
