Newman had one of Hollywood's rare enduring marriages. Asked for the secret, Newman said he had no reason to roam: "I have steak at home. Why should I go out for a hamburger?" As I said...

A very fine example of living for others, be it his wife or those in need. Some people truly deserve statues. RIP sir.

He was a world class racing driver and was as good as any that raced sports cars through the 70's. Briefly met him at the Long Beach Grand Prix ten years ago and he was extremely gracious to nobodies like me and the missus. He had the most incredible eyes I have ever seen. Someone we would all do well to emulate.

We are a celebrity oriented society. Some I've known and worked with were memorable human beings no matter how recognizable they were. Some were asses who were simply fortunate the chips fell where they did. The understanding that chance was a primary factor in their status is one of the attributes that set the former apart from the latter. Mr. Newman was a humble and generous man. Grounded enough to realize that luck played a large role in his professional success. That's rare and worthy of admiration.
