My Celebrity slot-head CC53 came with standard nylon classical strings, likely the originals considering the pristine condition of the guitar. After OGL luthiered the neck a little, we replaced the strings with similar new ones which came with the guitar, making the traditional loop/knot on the bridge end.

QUESTION: I see a lot of nylon classical strings on eBay with ball ends. Can I use them on the Celeb?

I appreciate all of you and your willingness to share experience/knowledge/humor.

Either ones work.
Al, ever had one of the balls slide off (serious question)? The ones I remember were just clamped around the string, the unwound ones that is.

Yes it's a bit of a hastle, but I still prefer tying my own knots. Something about the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. That's why I roll my own ... ah, never mind.

Actually, there is a kind of knot I have seen people do where you do not tie the string "around" the bridge like a normal classical. Instead you tie a knot in the string and then thread it through the bridge just like it was a ball end. Anybody know what kind of knot this is?

My band did a festival gig last Saturday & the guitar player in the band before us had a Custom Balladeer. He broke a 4th string early in their set & pulled a great trick, which I guess you can only do with an Ovation-style pinless bridge. He had a few extra wraps around the machine-head post, he unwound the string a few turns at the head, passed it back through the bridge, tied a knot in the end & had it back up to pitch before the singer had introduced the next song!!!!!!!!!!!

in all honesty No it has never happened. Now I am not a classical player and only have an old guild mark 3 and a viper classical but so far so good.
If it ever happened it most likely would have happened to someone I sold a guitar to with those strings.

Personally, I like the good old 'tie around the bridge' type strings for no other reason than it looks good...even Ovation players can have some traditional tendancies occasionally!

Well, guys, I really appreciate the good and varied advice. I was all set to buy several sets of ball-end strings (that's what I find the most of on eBay). However, I now find another benefit of having a luthier around the house -- he claims he will keep all my instruments strung for me! Being a rather traditional minded gentleman, he is willing to tie the ends for me so I can stay with that tradition! :D
