My friend and I were both in the market for Ovations- but with neither of us awash in cash, opted for the most inexpensive one that still had that Ovation look (mulitiple soundholes) and that time, it turned out to be the CS- 257. He bought his new at Guitar Center for around $550 + tax without a case. I held off buying for awhile, because frankly, even that was a little rich for me. I canvassed ebay and found a CS-257, only 6 months old (according to the owner) with a hardshell case- in the exact color that I wanted- and I paid hundreds less than he did because it was 'used.' And it came with a top of the line SKB case. The moral of the story is that since the CS-257 is essentially an entry level guitar, there will more than likely come a time when you'll want to upgrade. And when you go to sell it, you'll take less of a hit if you bought a used one (depending on where you bought, of course). I can tell you this- a year after he bought his and I bought mine, you can't tell which one was purchased new, now they're both used. And for the record, I ended up upgrading to an American Ovation, and consequently I'm looking to sell that CS-257 (in the transparent blue finish) I spoke of. If you're interested, email me. -Rich P.S. There are risks involved in buying on Ebay, but I'll let the others fill you in on that :D

But although I'd probably prefer the usa made collector, I'd be too leery about the age and possible unseen troubles of an old guitar. For the same price, you could get a much newer usa Ovation on eBay. Or, in my opinion, the absolute best route is to buy a brand new usa guitar. Here's a list of new USA made Ovations at great prices: Balladeer tear drop burst for only $649 at worldmusicsupply.com Balladeer Special for only $599 at samash.com Standard Balladeer for only $459 at samash.com Upgrading to a brand new usa Ovation could make a world of difference, and it doesn't have to cost that much more! That '82 collector's edition probably doesn't have the most advanced electronics, while a new CS-247/257 comes pretty close to having the latest technology. Compare apples to apples.......

Though I much prefer a USA made guitar, a celebrity could probably beat this one due to its age...but that's not to say a celeb would be the best choice. I think a brand new balladeer for $459 is a steal! [ August 17, 2002: Message edited by: snowlock ]

The pre-amp design isn't paticularly important in my opinion, If you need extra EQ or feedback control, use outboard gear. It's a no-brainer.
