I've been eyeballing this Legend Classic 1663 (nylon string) for the last three weeks. I play it almost everyday, since it's located at my job, and I really like it. I'd like to hear from anyone else who owns one, or used to own one to get some feedback about this guitar- before I commit to buying it, and before my wife commits me for buying it! A brief description is as follows: Slotted headstock (nylon string standard) not sure if it's a mid or deep bowl- it's brown though. Natural gloss finish (no nicks or dings). Stacked volume/tone knob with both the mono and stereo output jacks. I know there are later incarnations of this guitar ie 1763, 1773 etc etc but I may be able to score this at a really good price. Look forward to any input :D

Rich, Ovation classic guitars are absolutely hated by classical guitarists, even more than traditional steel-string players hate Ovations. The heavier construction of Ovation nylon-strings is probably the main reason, also classical guitarists shun any form of amplification. However for jazz, Chet-style country, Latin-American guitar styles, or just to get "the nylon-string vibe" there's nothing much to compete for the money

According to our "new list" in the reference section this model was only made for two years '83 & '84 and had a list price of $915.00.
If you like it, that's all that counts.

Thanks for the replies gents! I like the way Paul put it, I'm looking for that "...nylon string vibe." And OGLI, you're right, I really like it so I went ahead and got it today :D Didn't hurt that it was sitting in our inventory for 14 months, so the boss let me have it at cost (we acquired it used to begin with). Other than some light string buzz, it's perfect- no nicks, dings or otherwise!
Another testament to how much good info is on this website: I had some questions about nylon strings but all were answered using the search function of this site! Bye for now....

You're gonna like this guitar. I've got a 1763
Classical and a 1674 Country Artist and am very happy with them, unplugged and plugged in. D'Addario makes a classical string, the Pro Arte, in hard tension that seems to work well on these guitars. I found out a while back that they now make the string with a nano covering on the bass strings (like Elixars), for long life. I'm going to try some of these this week.

Congrats on your new guitar.

Thanks Moodypi, btw how long do nylon strings last compared to steel strings? I picked up a set of Pro Arte's last night- am going to venture tying my own knots

Nylon strings are easy. It just takes a little patience. Most nylon strings last about 3 months. The bass strings go dead. That's why I'm going to try the Pro Artes with the nano coating. On the Elixars with the coating, my steel strings last about 4-6 months as opposed to about a month with regular strings.
Oddly, the Elixar classical strings did not sound good on my nylon string guitars. The bass strings were too bright.

I bought a bunch of the D'addario coated composite classical strings cheap ($3 a set from the bargain bin in Umanovs, when I was in NYC a few weeks ago) and I really like them. I bought a shit-load of D'addario coated bronze strings a few months ago and hated them. They last for ages, but sound terrible. I still have half a box left. The Elixirs are much better, especially the Nano-web version. Someone in the trade asures me that Gore-tex (who make Elixir) just buy D'addario strings & apply the coating.
