So, I have an '87 1581 that I recently picked up out of severe Adamas remorse...and I'm curious if anyone's had the factory upgrade from the old OP24 to one of the newer preamp types? Specifically, I'm thinking of the Pro Studio, though I may see if they can retrofit to the iDea instead and just swap for the Studio I have now when I do stage work.

I may just see if I can upgrade to an Optima, though I don't know if Ovation's got any on hand still...may have to scrounge.

Andrew, they still have Optima's.
The problem with going from an OP24 to an OPPro-type config is that they are designed to occupy different areas of the waist, leaving you with a gap.
My 1581 has the Optima, and it sounds great.

+1 for the Optima - sounds really good on the Millennium. The only problem is that I have to wear glasses to see the tuner  whereas with the OpPro, I can see it from yards away.

Ditto on the Optima, including the reading glasses. I need to just keep a cheap pair down in the music room.

I've had a couple with the Optima, and it's still pretty much my ideal stage preamp. I thought it would be interesting to see if they could do a kidney-can upgrade, but you're right, it is in a different area, so I guess that might be tough.

I have upgraded my 1587 to the op24+ it is not the newest but it is an improvement over the op 24. That change is a relatively easy do it yourself job with just some very minor mods.

There may be an even newer electronics package that has the flat rectangle shape as well. The Op24 + with the Shape button is great for the modern sound and not too expensive anymore. Ask some of the guy's in here, they may have one around to sell.

I hated the OP Pro on my 1769 AD II (DiMeola Custom Legend 2005). John Budny sent me the OP Studio as a retrofit: It is TRULY superior. My guitar, however, manifests glitches now: there is a buzz and a problem with the battery light. I suspect these are idiosyncratic to my particular gitar and NOT a sign of general incompatibility... After all it's the same preamp "cavity" (with the one exception of the 1769's "booster button")

BOTTOM LINE: the OP Studio is much better (than OP Pro; never had an Optima....)

Optimas are as good as anyone needs. No manufacturer can keep putting the same pre-amp in a guitar forever so they have to keep adding features/value, but Ovation got it pretty much spot-on with the Optima. In a sane world the Optima would be the one.

I'm with you Schroeder...they definitely got it right with the Optima. Guess I'll go that route, and have them add the xlr jack while they're at it.

Wuss. If you realise that the green light is directly above the E light then all is good. As long as you have enough eyesight to see which red light is on and can tell red from green.
