I am the original owner of this 1981 1117. It is the tobacco burst color and on the sticker inside, the model number is just 1117. No -X for the color. Is this common? Also, the truss rod is adjusted from inside thus having no truss rod cover. I have seen very few if any Ovations like this. Anybody got any info as to why this one is different?

Its a beauty and a dream to play and near mint still after 21 years.

thanks

Almost all Ovations built (at least the USA steel strings) have no truss rod cover. The adjustment is done inside the guitar at the base of the neck.

When Ovations changed to the K-bar truss rod, in the early 80's, they lost the rod-cover on the headstock and adjustments were made through the soundhole, or through an access hole in the back on the multi-hole models. Prior to that they all adjusted at the headstock except the production Adamas. The Folklore, slot-head 12-strings & nylon-strings kept the original rod.

Hey Bukwheat,
Nice guitar! I have the same one, but in a natural spruce top(deep color, aged to a butterscotchy/cedar looking tone).

You've got yourself a winner! Let me know if you ever want to part ways with it!

When the K-Bar kame the adjustment moved to the heel end of the neck as Paul has pointed out. The early ones had the adjustment at the nut and many of these have a 14 degree peghead which some argue makes for a better sound. With the K-Bar you have a 7 degree peghead and less tension across the nut. Less chance of peghead cracks but perhaps a wee tad less oomph in the tone. (the Adamas were always 10 degree but maybe that's changed now)
