I finally got around to a chore I've been meaning to perform on my mandocello ever since I got it. It has a walnut bridge, but I had asked them to stain it ebony to match the fretboard. They stained it VERY dark walnut, but not ebony. So I finally managed to wedge in the time to break out the Fiebings Dye and, along with changing the apparent racial heritage of several fingers, managed what you see below.

This stuff is great, but GOOD LORD MAN! Where some gloves or something. It has a life of its own and gets bloody everywhere!

Thanks Stephen!

To do that conversion, wouldn't that require a new nut?

But what about 'leaky' waveguides? :D

Patch , that really came out nice! Was there any other prep besides the tape?

Don't know if I would trust myself using that stuff... it is persistent!

Not really, though I roughed up the bridge with a little very fine steel wool before putting the dye on. The two keys to the taping are to use LOTS of short pieces around the front (curved) part of the bridge. Then use an edging tool (for me it's the rounded edge of the nail file on my pocket knife) to lightly press the tape down flush to the bridge.

I also use Q-tips to apply the dye. Rub it in evenly all over and let it stand a little. That's why the bridge has glossy-looking spots at first. After five or ten minutes, wipe off the excess with a paper towel or soft sloth. If any seeps under the tape, wrap a clean cloth or paper towel around your edging tool and try to get it off. If it's stubborn, use a little (VERY LITTLE) alcohol on the cloth. And dry it off immediately.

Considering how meticulous you are about cleaning your guitars Iffy, this kind of thing is right up your alley.
