Greetings everyone!

I've been "gleaning" some info from this excellent forum for the past few weeks and thought I'd finally register since I received my Elite Special S778(least I think it's a 778) the other day. What a nice guitar! Very clean and great action! It's been 20+ years since I've picked up a guitar and I've always wanted an Ovation...finally got it :)

Anyway, I hope you folks don't mind if I ask some foolish "newbie" questions from time to time as I get back into playing. Take care.

I am probably as much of a Ring lover as exists, and am waiting for the "Two Towers" due out in the next few days. I read the whole enchilada of the Ring books 20 years ago when I was between jobs, including the historical summaries. Welcome to the board, you will feel at home as we have all the elements of the middle world that you have chosen to be the final king. You will find some of the finest people on this board and the nasdgal aren't welcome.

I have no idea what Bailey just said of the rings mentioned but would like to welcome you to the forum. If you haven't used the search button on this site yet, check it out. I haven't posted many times on the site myself mainly because every question that I've had has already been asked and answered. I enjoy the threads that are started and I visit the site every day as I hope you do. Now tell the truth, does it feel like you're having an affair after 20 years. I know the rush that I still get after 38 years playing. Jim

Yea, I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the early seventies too when a girl I was enamored with turned me on to them. I have to say though the first movie was good, it just didn't have the impact the books did for me. The characters didn't seem to develop the depth they did in the books. Particularly Aragorn and Gandalf. I am looking forward to seeing Two Towers though.

You just described my feelings about the first movie. It was correct but it missed the essence of the story somehow, it was adventurous but somehow the majesty and heroism of the book didn't come through. Maybe our imagination is better than special effects. The Two Towers may work better as there are fewer interactions as the ring bearer faces the realization that it is not going to be an easy task, and faces the dangers as an individual. Also the ancient, mysterious relics of the earlier kingdoms didn't come out well in the first movie (I'm a history nut so I loved the fictional history of the middle kingdom). The good guys definitely would be playing Ovations.

I'm sure you're right Bailey,the Hobbits being very fond of round shapes and surly the elves were skilled luthiers. There must have been a few roundbacks in the Shire.

Thanks for the welcome folks. Ovations are just sooo beautiful(IMO). In fact, I know 2 people who play that have stopped by since I've received mine. They immediately "fell in love" with the guitar. Checking the serial # and such I've identified it as a 2000 Elite Special S778(mid-depth).

I've read LotR perhaps 15 times over since the 4th grade when my mother turned me on to Tolkien. Truly one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all time. It'll be right there with the likes of "The Iliad". For those of you who want a little more "background", check out "The Silmarillion". It describes the creation of the Earth along with the 1st and 2nd ages of Middle Earth. I'm on my 4th reading of it know.

I'm looking forward to "The Two Towers". Helm's Deep, Isengard, Minas Tirith should be some awesome battles! I've watched FOTR several times over the last year and thought it well done. I do wish they had added Tom Bombadil though...the only being in Middle Earth that the Ring had no power over....hmm. Thanks again for the welcome folks. :)

Aragorn;
From one newcomer to another, welcome. I recently aquired an Elite also, mid depth 1778. I love it. You are quite right they are beautiful instruments. This thread has me looking at mine in a little different light today. The natural spruce, the fine leaf adornments, the rain drop position markers, gold tuners, it does have a bit of an elven quality dosn't it?

Welcome Aragorn - I took guitar lessons in 4th grade...at the time, the Beatles broke up :( I've piddled about with guitars since, but never learned to play. For a couple years now, it's been eating at me to get one. I finally got an Ovation & Peavy amp this week (KD gives finger to all snide remarks about Celebrities - is happy anyway - I HAVE AN OVATION!).

BTW - does anyone know of a website where I can print off some music with fretboard/chord diagrams? ....like I used to get when I was a littler kid?

if you can't find a web site, browse the music mags anywhere, some of them are filled with tablature and it is modern and current.

To Aragorn and Ceres

The fact that they made the movie and tried to do it right is some progress. If it prompts a few people to dig a little deeper then a few more will have enjoyed Tolkien's wonderful creations. Didn't Aragorn play an instrument in one of the inns, or am I confused?

Growing up when I did, Tolkien was the primer for the real mind expanding series of book by Carlos Casteneda. I suspect if we opened that subject, the board would get very lively ... if we could actually remember any of what happened ... and we all know that immediately following the ingestion of the mescaline and peyote ALL guitars, especially Martins and Gibsons, had the familiar look and feel of roundbacks and Breadwinners. :D
