I just bought a Korean made Ovation Ultra 1517 today.
It sounds great.
The guy who sold it said it is about 20 years old.
I found 3 things that doesn't get very well with each other and these are:
1. The guitar looks really new, it doesn't have a scratch on it, also no signs of a pick on the body under the strings, naturally should be seen if it has been well played.
That made me suspect that the guitar is young and not 20 years old as the guy said...
2. The serial number is 155971. Checking the Ovation website, I found that by the serial number, this guitar should have been made on 1978 ! Which doesn't come across well with the fact that it looks brand new .
3. I found the owner manual paper in the guitar case, and it looks like it was printed on 5/1985
So what's going on ?? Is the serial "crack"
table on Ovation's website correct ? Does it refer only American instruments ?
On what years has this model been manufactured anyway ?
Should I assume it was made on 1985 ?
Here's the serial to date mfctd table I used:

Thanks !!

According to the Ovation Price History that guitar was produced from 1984 to 1991 and your guitar is probably an 85 model like the literature that came with it. Tha serial# chart is only good for USA models, hope this helps.

Location: Colorado | My 1617-2 is 1977 and shows only minor pick abrasion in the surface finish. I know I could polish it to a brilliant sheen in minutes with a good plastic polish. Other than that, yould think mine was brand new.
I wonder if the dude swapped labels out of and older guitar to somehow decieve the buyer?
Either way its still an Ovation and you liked it or you would never have bought it....right? |
