I think that perhaps after this initial "pilgrimage" to CT, maybe we should consider having subsequent gatherings in different regions of the country to give everyone somewhat of a fair shot at reasonable travel distances. Perhaps let the regional members that are "indiginous" to that particular area act as "hosts" and work out logistics, etc. When I used to be a sign painter, I often attended regional "LetterHead Meets". These were usually hosted by someone who owned/ran a local sign shop in that particular area that specialized in the lost art (no pun, Al) of hand lettering. There would be discussion groups, contests, bullpen sessions, and usually a group project that would benefit the host town (like gold-leafing the town fire truck or "refurbing" the Town Hall sign) for free. Don't get me wrong, this was no "Boy Scout Jamboree" by any means (sign painters are bigger drunkards than musicians....hmmmm....what does that mean about ME?) Anyway, my point(?) is that it would just give a broader base of members to meet/play/party/passout/repeat. Just a thought. But FIRST we gotta make this initial one a success. So,....c'mon,....c'mon!,....."click" on that link!.....you KNOW you want it!!.....you bitch!

I am alledgedly responsible for continuing to make that happen so who knows if it will ever happen again. I do have a nice back yard with a barbecue grill and have had jams there before of course this would need to be a warm weather thing. Miles can tell you we rocked the neighborhood and even though most of the neighborhood people hate me they leave us alone

Talk about sign painters reminded me of something that I almost forgot. The Charlie that owned Good Time Charlie's bar in Ocean Beach, CA (FREE BEER TOMORROW) that I have mentioned a few times was a sign painter, and a good one. I met him in Ohio where his wife (a teacher) was from, they had met in CA and returned to Ohio to be close to her family. We worked together at a chemical plant lab and drank and partied frequently. He, and I, got involved in a unionizing campaign that failed and cost him his job leading to an unfair labor practices suit on his part in which I testified in his behalf. He operated a sign painting business while he was litigating and headed to CA when he lost the suit, and bought the bar, I followed a year or so later when the plant closed. He was a good sign painter and as you said, drinking and partying were not strange to him and the opportunities in San Diego and Tijuana were ruinous to both of us in the early 60's. The big problem was closing his bar at 2:00 AM and realizing the party was just beginning in Tijuana where night and day would fade into a drift from one side street bar to another, we only hit the real mexican ones and avoided the tourist dives. Bohemia was cheap, there was good food to be had and the music was real and good and certain eye-opening pharmaceuticals were legal. It seemed like we got along good with the Mexican people in those days, we would swap drinks and jokes and stories just like we used to in Ohio family bars. I'm not going to say what our wives thought of this, but it wasn't good, we did avoid the night ladies so we had some credibility. Sign painters are all right. Bailey

Besides, it's still 5 months away. That's pretty long for most people to plan I think. I wouldn't really expect too many to sign up before the new year. But... on the otherhand.. If you KNOW you are going... SIGN UP.
