As some of you have read I took my old Ovation out of the closet today where it has been for quite some time. Based on some very nice help from members of the OFC I am reasonably certain that my guitar is a 1978 1615 Pacemaker 12 string. I played this guitar for many years but always enjoyed my Martin 6 string much more. A few years back I bought a Taylor 12 string (I know, I know a so so guitar etc.) and also have enjoyed it very much. Today however, I wanted to give the Ovation another chance. I polished up, put new string on (it is in very good condition given the fact that it has been sitting around for years and is almost 25 years old). I played it as did two friends (both of whom are good players and have played and owned many ovations over the years). We all agreed this guitar played very stiff, had little if no neck action and was generally a difficult guitar to handle. My question is, is this Ovation (12 string 1615 Pacemaker from 1978) just not a great guitar and/or did Ovation do something different in the late 70's to make the 12 strings better? If so, what type of things were done? If not, what am I missing (mabe a problem with the neck--it doesn't look warped or anything like that)> I would be interested in some views (and sorry once again to all OFC members for cross-posting so many messages earlier today).

I have a Pacemaker of the same vintage. It plays fine. The Pacemaker was the most basic 12-string in the range at the time but it's a very good instrument. Have the neck relief & saddle height checked. It may just need a shim out and a turn of the truss rod to make it play better. You could also try a lighter guage of strings.
