Location: Madison, Wisconsin | Just found a Custom Legend at a local store for $789.00. Seems too good to be true. It's a 2000 model but is in great shape. Can anyone help me out as to what to look for that could possible be wrong for it to sell so low?

Location: The Shop | Check for finish cracks around the bridge, any stress cracks in the finish on the top and then check to see if the neck is straight and if you can adjust the neck. If every thing is cool, get it! What is the model #? |

Location: Madison, Wisconsin | I'm starting to wonder about this. The model number is 1769 and the serial number on the headstock is 518540. From the serial number and the model number, it looks like it was built in 1997. It seems to have a newer style pre-amp. I am still rather new in the Ovation market so I'm still learning. Is there some way to find out what pre-amp was standard in 1997?

Location: SoCal | According to my Dec 1997 catalog, the Custom Legend came with the Optima preamp which is a very good system.
This guitar was the deep bowl with cutaway. It still had the large rosette around the soundhole, and large inlays on the neck.
Quite honestly, the dealer may be selling it at cost because people want Taylors and other so so guitars. This is an excellent instrument and if I was in the market, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. 6 1/2 years ago I bought my Adamas 12 string the same way. People who wanted 12's were buying Taylors and Guilds. Big Blue sat on a wall for a year before I could finally afford him, and he's one of the best guitars I've ever played, and the best 12 string period.
Don't think something has to be wrong with the Custom Legend. I'm assuming that it comes with the Ovation warranty, which is good. It's probably the market, not the guitar, that's the problem. |

| Reasonable deal if it's in mint condition with the original Ovation case. It's around $850 with tax.
The case would cost you $120+, it could be close to $950 with tax for guitar/case. Not so good a deal.
You could get a brand new 2002 Legend with Ovation case for $650-750 online. The preamp on the new model is better too. |
