Does anyone have a historical list of the Ovation pre-amps? There seem to be lots of different styles out there and it would be nice to be able to roughly date a guitar by knowing which pre-amp it had.

It will be tough to date guitars by the preamp as you would have to list every model. New preamps were introduced on specific models, them made their way through the line. For instance, the OP24 first appeared in the 1984 collectors model, then it went into other guitars. Same with the stacked pot vol and tone. First went into the New Custom Legend in I think late 75 or early 76. then it went stereo and the V+T went into legends.

Hard to date just by the preamp itself unless you just want a ballpark figure.

I used to date Chevy's by the tail light mold date but that was flawed as well.

Yeah, I remember that!!

For some strange reason, over the years I developed this inane ability to date Volkswagen Beetles just by looking at them (still can).

A lotta good THAT does in this day and age!

It would have been more fun if you could date women just by looking at them.

You have to ask women to date them, just looking usually doesn't get you a date.

I find I can manage it if I look at them while licking my forehead.

We not only got off the subject, we seem to have lost complete control of the thread. Does anybody here have a cat named Garfield, his owner, Jon, has a way with women.

No, my cat is named Otis but I would still like to see a history of the pre-amps that told when, for instance, Ovation went from the single knob to two knobs or the stacked knob. (I probably should not have used the word "knob" but....)

If you can show that it truely is a stacked knob that might help you get dates.

The first time I became aware of a stacked knob on an Ovation was in the very late 70's. The first time I became aware of anything else stacked was probably in the mid 60's. The former had a much more profound impact on my life than the later.
