I just saw a used Ovation in a guitar shop. It is an american made model 1512. The serial number is 340111 - which according to this web site means it was made in 1985-1986. It has no EQ controls, just a volume know located next to the left side of the neck.

What would the model name be? The asking price is $465 including a hard shell case. It looks in great shape and plays great (except that it had the dullest strings on it I have ever heard).

$465 looks like a good deal to me. What do you think? --Mike Z.

Sounds like an Ultra. The early USA Ultras had a variant of the Matrix foam/ali neck, but with a re-frettable rosewood fingerboard. The later ones were made overseas with conventional necks. All had laminated tops. There may have been a USA version with a conventional neck. I'm pretty sure the Ultras from the mid 80's were imports. Also, a catalog I have states that the 1512 was "not available in US markets" If I'm right about the model the price seems a little high compared to solid-topped USA models of similar vintage, which can be had at that price or not a lot more.

Thanks for your reply Paul. It seems strange that It would be an import as I looked at the label in side and it did say made in Hartford CT., but I guess you never know.
Anyway, thanks again.

Mike, If it says made in Hartford Ct etc. it's a USA model. The early Ultras were a progression from the Matrix. I.E. an attempt at an affordable entry-level USA-built Ovation. The fact that they went overseas with this speaks volumes. Nearly $500 for this guitar is too much, even at dealer prices.

Sorry or the delay--i was just looking back through the postings.
The model 1512 is indeed an Ultra with the knob style of electronics. I bought mine off E Bay at a steal of 85 dollars with case and shipping cost. However the crystals in the pickup are bad but she still plays sweet and the local guitar expert fix it man here in Houston can put a newer under fret board pickup on it at a cost of 70 dollars. I believe if memory serves right it was only a 1984 or 85 year run on this model which sold new at about 450.oo so of course being a limited run I would think at any price it is a bargain !
Let me know if I can help farther
