I need some advice on setting the action on my Custom Balladeer. I have the action set relativly low, but to me the action on the high E string still seems high to me. I have one shim under the pickup. It will buzz if played kinda hard starting at about the 11th fret on the B and high E strng. I know a big part of my problem is that I am trying to get it to play like my Adamas. The Custom Balladeer has a bigger neck, and I think I am having trouble getting use to it. Seems after all these years of playing, I am still tying to get the action lower than is possible. Any advice on how I can just leave the guitar alone and stop messing with the darn action!

It could be that the nut slot for the first string is a little higher than the others. Fret the first string at the second fret & check the clearance over the first fret, then compare it to the other strings, recut if it needs to go lower.
Another possibility is to have a tapered bridge-shim made.

An unlikely worst case senario is that there is a slight twist in the neck. This would be difficult & expensive to correct.

Chances are that you are, as you suspect, trying to get the action lower than the guitar will allow. The buzzing past the 11th kinda confirms this.

Paul D,

Maybe the only problem is that your trying to set the action too low.

If you can try shimming it up, your problems may go away.

Acoustic guitars in particular prefer the action a little higher. If you can get used to it you'll be rewarded with less buzzing and be able to attack harder and get more (and cleaner sounding) volume.

Could be you got a small hump where it joins the body. No big deal, happens alot. With lo action you'll see it more. Have someone level the frets up there.
