I currently own an Ovation Celebrity I picked up a couple of years ago from a co-worker for $100.00 and an Applause mandolin ($250.00 maybe too much?) which was previoulsy owned and included really nice rectangular case for it.
I'm ready to upgrade as some friends and I have formed a band, have my eye on a Legend 1867 that a locally owned shop has for $899.00. I've played it every time I go in there and really like it. Even the "Blue Sparkle" finish.
Shallow body, I know, but my ever-widening middle appreciates the way it feels when standing up to play.
Hope to add pics of the new purchase soon!

I won't try to give you any advise on the guitar you are looking at other than to say if you like it it's probably OK. I'm a mandolin player and I'm curious about the Applause as I've never seen one that I can recall, is it acoustic/electric and are you playing it much. IMHO the Ovation mandolins are excellent when played amplified. Welcome to the board.

I really like the Applause. I picked it up to try and learn a different instrument. I priced mandolins around town and on-line and didn't want to spend a whole lot as I was just learning. Bought it second hand in a Mr. E's music store - someone else traded it in for a Lotus (a brand I could find NO information about) that I had looked at previously at the store. The manager sold it to me for the same price.(it was $150.00 cheaper - I think - then what they had already put on the price tag) nice hardshell rectangular case, too. The model is MAE 148, with a natural finish. I like the way it rings out. Several people have asked me "Is that a baby guitar?" because of the shape, which I like, too.
Here's the rub. Myself and another friend starting learning on it and trading off playing at an open mic we go to and then met a really GOOD mandolin player who now plays in a band with us, so I've been practing guitar a lot and haven't gotten back to the mandolin. |

I've played my nephew's Celebrity mandolin and liked the amplified sound, the applause looks very similar. I play bluegrass mandolin mostly and the arched top styles are suited for that, my interest in the Ovation mandolins is for country, blues etc., where an acoustic mandolin is overpowered and I haven't been to happy with sticking a Barcus Berry on my acoustics. The Ovation amplification seems to work well in that situation.
