| I bought a black 1537 #302670 at the Ovation factory in the mid-80's. It was on a shelf in the back of the shop in a case covered in wooddust. I was interested in an Adamas when I discovered this Elite. I fell in love with this guitar.
The guy giving me the private tour told me that this was a prototype for a guitar line that was deemed to be too expensive for mass production. What's the real story here?
I played this guitar in the 80's in a bluegrass band, and yeah, I got a lot of nasty looks from Martin players, but this guitar has such class that I endured the groans.
I left bluegrass and went into midi and never touched it again until just recently (I'm now playing a Taylor). It's in mint condition save for six small finish cracks just below the bridge. I had a luthier re-glue the bridge as it was coming up from being strung for so long in the case.....my screw up.
It also has one small finish crack from the bridge to the neck. Other than that it looks new. If I was to part with this guitar, what should I ask?
I'd gladly post pics if I knew how, I'm brand new to this forum.
Thanks for your time,

| One more thing.....I saw where my guitar's serial # was the first one made in '84, but weren't these guitars first introduced in '82? Where can I read a history of this line?
Thanks again,

Location: SoCal | The 1537 Elite was introduced in 1983 and was sold in that configuration for about 2 years before the fretboard went from walnut to rosewood, and the body binding went from wood to what ever the white stuff is that is used. The wood top may have also been downgraded, I'm not certain. Also the electronics went from the Adamas 2 knobber stereo to the OP 24. The model number was changed to 1718.
I personally think that my 1537 Elite sounds better than most of the Taylors I've played and the neck feels much better. But those are very subjective personal opinions.
As to current value, watch ebay. Anywhere from $500-$800. Very underpriced for that much guitar. |
