OK, I was looking at Mike's (Woody) pictures of his new arrival (original) Josh White, and it looks to have an overlayed rosette (stick on plastic)(maybe it's just the pictures). Both the reissues I've owned had an inlayed rosette. (flush with the top) I thought the reissue was supposed to be an accurate recreation of the original right down to three three piece top, which it has. What's up with that?

The original was flush.

Later production had bonded rosettes with 2-piece tops, early were 3-piece with inlaid rosettes. I've seen both, and their varitions

I don't think the Josh Whites ever had an overlaid rosette. He died in 68 or 69 and the guitar was discontinued for a couple of years. When it came back in about 71, it was the Folklore.....

All Josh Whites originally had inlaid rosettes. The stick-on rosette didn't come about until after the JW was already discontinued.

Some JWs got stick-on rosettes added later in life because the original inlaid ones had some delamination and shrinkage problems.

I've definately seen a few original JW's with bonded rosettes, but that's probably it, replacements for inlaid rosettes that had shrunk.

JW died in September 69. I have a 68 Deluxe balladeer with an inlaid rosette and a 68 GC12 with stick-on. So we could conclude that 1968 was a transition year.

My GC DB was built over the winter of 68-69 and has the inlaid rosette. I'd be willing to bet that 69 was the transition year when Ovation went to textured bowls and glued on rosettes. My GC 12 string was built in 69 and before it was rebuilt, had the textured bowl and glued on rosette.

Minutia here......
