Hi all,

I'm a brand new member and just wanted to say I'm glad I found this forum! This is an awesome resource.

I own a brand new guitar gallery in Denver and have a customer who wants to trade in a black Thunderbolt. I've never heard of this guitar before, much less even seen one! Does anyone have any educated guesses as to how much this guitar is worth? I want to be as fair as possible to him but am just totally clueless on this one.

Thanks for any help!
Gary

I followed one on eBay a couple of months ago that I believe ended up fetching just under $500.

Guitarx,
Man they jumped all over that! You should thank your lucky stars. I've asked three times if anyone could estimate a value on my limited. Not that it's a big deal, I don't plan to sell it. I might insure it though. It would be nice to know.

Estimates for insurance vs "how much it's worth" just keeps coming up and they have almost NOTHING to do with each other as far as I can see. I would guess for insurance purposes a Limited would qualify in the $800 range maybe more. However, you might sell it for $300 to $1000 and if you had to replace it, your options would be the same.

Thanks MIles,
I was just curious more than anything. I've owned Les Pauls and SG's, none of which compare to the Limited from this players point of view, but the values of those guitars, now that they are considered "vintage", seem askew to say the least.
Thanks again,

"now that they are considered "vintage", seem askew to say the least."

I am truly amazed at times. Musical instruments, especially guitars fall into so many categories compared to other "collectables." They are #1, a musical instrument so there is that value. They are a piece of workmanship too, and yet are also a tool of a musician to create something else, e.g. music. In many cases they are also "historical" marking anything from a period in time, to a particular artist or event.

My favorite "food for thought" on guitars, especially Ovations is... that I don't know of too many other things in life that you can buy for let's say $1000. Use every weekend (and more) for 30 years (If you made only $10 a weekend that's over $15,000). And then sell it for $1000, the same you paid for it at the end of those 30 years. Not a bad investment at all, even if you never made money playing, and just sold it for the same you paid for it.

It is really strange those thunderbolts. They are so 80s in appearance. But for some reason any thunderbolt molested by Ovation service sounds really good. I sometimes think its because the sound hole area is smaller than an elite,.. I once played an elite with just the tooling holes and no sound holes and it sounded awesome. F hole comparable.
