Ovation pres are compatible with all 3 pickup types. The OP-X is basically the Optima without the Lo-Z out & chromatic tuner. It has 4-band EQ & a feedback notch.

The OP-X and Optima were originally designed for the classic Ovation pickups in use at the time (circa 1994). I think the tone balance and EQ points are ideal when used with this pickup.

Why would they go out with all 3 pickup types? I've seem SMT's with Optima pre's & both the Thinline or TruBalance. Other guitars such as the Legend & Custom Legend have been issued with the Trubalance & Optima. I have a custom guitar on the way with an OP50 & a trubalance, are you suggesting this is a less than ideal combination.

Depends on the model. Back in '88 the only pickup was the original wide Ovation pickup that they'd used since the beginning. Sometime in the early to mid 90's the CP100 thinline was introduced and used on the imports & some USA guitars including the Adamas SMT and the 97 collectors. A little later the trubalance was introduced. Up until the latest catalog there didn't seem to be any logic as to which guitar got which pickup. Now it appears to be: imports & USA guitars up to Baladeer/Elite Special = Thinline. Elite/Legend = Trubalance, Custom Legend/Custom Elite/Adamas = original pickup.

hey paul, thanks for the info. but i'm still confused. mine is a 1768 Elite,1988. so i assume this is the original wide pick up. is this what btech means by"classic". and is this pickup suitable for the OP-X?

An '88 Elite would have the original wide pickup, now referred to as the "High-output" pickup, and will work just fine with an OP-X.
