Location: SoCal | I just got my copy of Acoustic Guitar magazine. Lucinda Williams is on the cover. Martian is making her a Lucinda Williams signature model.
Question: Who is Lucinda Williams and can she play anything above the third fret?
Martian goes way overboard in their signature lines. |

Location: Fort Worth, Texas | Lucinda Williams is a good singer/songwriter/performer. I'm not sure where she's based out of or what her guitar playing skill is - she has a GREAT voice. A few years ago she released Car Wheels on A Gravel Road to critical acclaim. For critics that need to pigeonhole everyone's style you can call it "alt country" or "folk" or "singer/songwriter".....
Everything I've heard off of that release I've liked.... |

Location: NJ | One of the local stations here (WFUV-FM - who did the Kaki interview/broadcast) plays Lucinda Williams adnauseum. While I admire her songwriting skills, her singing voice just grates on my nerves. Maybe I'm just a biased, wise-ass "yankee", but her voice (to me) just has TOO much of that bleached blonde, half drunk, been "beat by my man", truck stop waitress inflection. But what the hell do I know?
Anyway, I guess she just made Martin's "flavor of the month". |

Location: SoCal | Actually, I know who she is. I've just always assumed that a signature model should be reserved for somebody who is really a player. We've had this discussion before. Martin has really gone off the deep end with their signature models. As far as I know, Ovation has only made two signature models. And both of those players can play circles around any of the Martin signature players. |

Location: Parkersburg, WV | I think Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills and Willie Nelson deserve their signature model not only for skill but association with the product. I was disappointed to see a Jim Croce model a couple of years ago. To me I will always picture Jim playing his sunburst Legend.

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Does anyone know what became of the guitar that survived the plane crash of Jim Croce? I believe it was sent back to Ovation back in 1973? Yes Patsbo I will always picture him playing an Ovation. |

Location: NJ | I seem to recall in a post a while ago that W2 alluded to Jim's guitar eventually making it's way back to Ingrid Croce (tho I may be wrong on that). Yeah, while I always picture him with that sunburst O, I think up until the "I've Got A Name" album, he was pretty much a Martin afficianado.
I also agree that Sig. models should be designated to those who made that guitar synonymous to their "sound", and not just someone who had a "hit" and happens (and/or is PAID) to play Martin's.
Case in point: Ian Anderson.
At a recent concert Ian had mentioned that he had just come from the Martin factory to work out the "specs" on an upcoming IA edition guitar (I would assume similar to the old Martin parlour guitar he used with Tull). While Ian DOES have a very distinctive acoustic guitar sound/style, he'd by no means be considered a "guitar giant". However, that distinctive sound from that particular guitar was instrumental (no pun) to the sound that WAS Jethro Tull. So, ". . It's a fair cop! . ."
(Too bad that old Ian NOW has all of his guitars custom made by Manson over in the UK!) ;) |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I went to Croce's Restaurant in San Diego a few years ago (run by Ingrid and her 2nd husband). Lots of Jim Croce memorablia on the walls including a sunburst Legend. Not sure if it is THE one or not. Also a Martin, LP covers, and photos. I kind of wondered what Ingrid's new husband thought of all this, but then again it's paying the bills. Not sure of the place is still there or not. As I recall the food kind of sucked. Dave |

Location: Tennessee | Croce's was still in operation as of a couple of months ago ... and maybe the food's not so great but it could be worse considering the Gaslamp district is devoted to tourists. Maybe my memory was fogged by a short stop into the storefront cigar factory for a hand-rolled, and a longer stop in one or two (or three or ...) of the blues bars that pepper the area.
I understand the guitar to be THE guitar ... at least that's what I was told by the waithelp. |
