Joined: September 2002 Posts: 808 Location: Seymour, Tennessee | I saw another post talking about old 68 vintage Deluxe Balladeers with a "Chain-Link Rossete". What exactly does this Roesette look like? The post concerned an Ovation on E-bay that was "Younger" (#3016 or something like that) than my 68 Deluxe Balladeer #A-975. I'm simply curious if that is the kind of Rosette on my guitar. Also, he said it came with a brown colored case. Mine has a black case with really hideous orange felt. My dad bought it with the guitar so I'm assuming it is a factory case. Is it? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

In 1970 they went to the attached plastic Ovation rosettes.

The lining was either orange, blue or dark purple (maybe red also, but I've never seen it). These cases were made by a company called Lifton. Later Ovation switched to the brown molded case. I'm quite sure that your Lifton case is the original one the guitar came in. Over the years many guitars ended up in different cases, so it's not unusual to find an old guitar in a newer brown case. As far as the chain link rosette, Paul pretty much answered your question, except that there were actually two different colors. The more common one is an off-white background with black chainlink and grapes. The more rare one (I've only seen one of these) is a black background with white chainlink and grapes. Dave

Dave, i thought the early cases were made by archcraft? for ovation..I had never heard of Lifton making them.Im not sure though ,you may be right.I had heard the name Archraft from ovation employees.

They are very similar with only some subtle difference - the texture of the covering is slightly different, the latches are in slightly different locations and the depth of the storage compartment is not the same. But both types appear definately made for roundback guitars. One type is definately made by Lifton and it has the metal Lifton emblem on the inside (see photo). I actually got this case from you. I always thought the Archcraft case referred to the "cardboard" cheapie case. But I could be wrong. Someone from Milano's Music here in AZ has serial number #55 and it has NO rosette. Mine is serial number #108 and it has the chainlink with off-white background. The other thing rare I have been looking for is the Josh White with the inlaid "cross hatched" rosette, same as the early classic. I've seen photos of two of these, but never one in person. You don't happen to have one in your closet, do you? Dave
