Location: Texas | I'll admit that I dig having cool stuff that not everyone has. I have only been an acoustic player. Lately I have been wanting to get an electric to jam with my oldest daughter.
I know absolutely nothing about old Ovation electrics.
First, which ones were good, cool, collectible etc.?
Second, why don't they still make them? Did they suck or did the company just decide to focus on the A/E market?
Third, would I be better going after some other brands and models or are these still considered great guitars. I've seen some on ebay but I don't know which ones to look for.
I don't want to be the kid in 1981 who saw all his friends riding BMX bikes. Tell your dad and then show up on a Huffy BMX while everyone else is on PK Rippers, Mongooses and the like.
I'm not looking for an axe to sell later...just one that sounds good, looks cool and not every kid on the block has one.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Sounds like you need to get a copy of "The History Of the Ovation Guitar". All of the Ovation electrics were pretty darn good guitars, some better than others, but most a cut above the competition. Why didn't they sell... well Bill Kaman seemed to think the public wasn't ready for the "Acoustic" guitar company to make electrics. I think it was purely marketing or lack thereof. I grew up in CT not far from Ovation and only knew of 3 models until about 10 years ago when I started collecting, and I was even surprised at what I didn't know about the models I at least knew existed. I would say it really depends on the sound you are looking for. The Viper is probably the most flexible sound wise. The UK-II is one of the best players, and although VERY flexible also has a sound of it's own to some extent. Those would be my recommended guitars for someone just getting into Ovation electrics. |
