Those of you who were at the factory tour last year will remember them as the stands being used in the engeneering department. I got a wall mount and a floor mount stand and really like them. They probably would have stood up to the hurricane. Just thought I'd pass on the info. :)

The Hercules stands use the weight of the guitar to close a pair of locking fingers to keep it from falling out. If you look at some of the factory pic, you'll see 'em. The Hercules stands came out just AFTER I had bought a bunch of the others. Figures! Looky Here: http://www.kamanmusic.com/?fa=news&art=104

I'm onto my 3rd double Hercules stand in under a year. The actual stands are fine but the cam mechanism which opens & closes the claw part isn't particularly robust. I've had 2 damaged to the point where they are unusable simply by having Speaker tripods placed on top of them in the truck (not by me, I hasten to add) I've now found a plastic toolbox which is just the right size to take a double & 2 single Hercules stands. I found a really cool gizmo which works great with the Hercules double & triple stands... http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/MONKEY.htm Great for keeping drinks, picks, slides, capos handy, Check it out in action.... http://www.ovationfanclub.com/gallery/PaulTempleman_monkey.jpg

Makes a nice "music room" stand. I bought a few of the Genesis-series stands from Ulimate and they seem to hold up to abuse rather nicely. I have this big, cordura nylon hockey-type bag that all of my stands get thrown into (sometimes literally!), and in almost three years of gigging with 'em I haven't damaged one yet (except losing those little rubber straps - that I never really used anyway). A really nice feature is that two of the three legs are neoprene padded. Not only does it give the back of the guitar a nice soft place to rest, they come in real handy in bar-fights . . . y'can do some real damage and not leave any marks. (Deny, deny, deny . . ) :D

That's what I like about the Genesis stands in that the "cradle" flips all the way back against the stand and makes it more compact. Previously I was using a bunch of chrome Hamilton stands which were nice and sturdy, but didn't fold up as well and required an EXTREME amount of torque on the knobs to get 'em to lock in place. They stay at home now.

When we were in the four-piece band, Rick my guitarist had a 3-guitar unit (I forget the make) that was a DISASTER design-wise! The support legs/feet weren't cofigured to didtribute the uneven weight. If he took one of the three guitars off, he had to rearrange the other two to keep the thing from potentially tipping over. I've been pondering going with a dual-instrument stand in the hopes of conserving floor space. One of the pains of some of the places we play is that the owners expect Rick & I - AND our gear - to fit in a friggin' phone booth! Sometimes, I'll just forego taking "breaks" because I don't wanna go through the aggravation of climing over all the shit!

I use 4 instruments with my band (B-bender Viper, Thunderhead, Breadwinner & Mandolin) I chose not to go with the triple stand because it takes up too much space for some of the "stages" we are expected to fit onto, so I use a double & 2 singles. Even though I have reservations about the durability of the grab mechanism I think these are great stands & I'm not about to change.

Joined: December 2002 Posts: 939 Location: Fort Worth, Texas | A friend of mine has a dual stand (not sure what brand, he's moved to Wyoming so haven't seen it in ahwile) that he resorted to putting weights on the bottom, weight-lifting weights, to stabalize it! I bought this neat single stand that folds up real small (thought it'd be good for Kerrville campgrounds, etc.) but realized that it causes the instrument to lean way back, so it doesn't work well in tight stages. I'm in need of better stands that take up less room, sounds like the Hurricane is the trick, now I'll be taking Legend, Mandolin and Viper to play on stage....
