Just got an Ebay special Balladeer. Excellent condition but both the guitar and case smell of cigarette smoke. I read about case smell removal, but what do you do about the guitar itself? Smells more inside the bowl than outside. Any suggestions?

leave it out side for a day or two.
put some baking soda inside to absorb the ordor.
fabreze is also good at absorbing odors.
sell it on e bay.

All of the gear I use on the road absolutely stinks of cigarette smoke, and as a non-smoker it really pisses me off. A while ago I opened up one of my road cases to get some extra mikes & cables for a recording session & I nearly threw up. Now I leave the cases open between gigs, which helps a little.

I keep a "branch" of eucaliptis (sp) in my older cases and have gone as far as putting a branch inside the sound hole to help with the smell. I've had two great e-bay finds that came "thick" with smoke. Make sure you clean the neck well the next time you change strings.

I've had similar problems. The baking soda and Fabreze thing helps. But in my opinion the best thing you can do is make sure you use ear plugs when ever you play - But stick them in your NOSTRALS. Actually you'd be surprised how many famous singers you just might sound like.

PS - Now let's not have any more post about sticking things in body openings ... Cliff ???

When you put your face close to the soundhole does the guitar really smell badly of smoke? And does the same thing happen when you put your head close to the open case? If so, try taking the burning cigarette out of your mouth !!!!!

That reminds me . . . how IS Louise . .? :D

I think all of the aforementioned remedies should help.

Every once in a while, I'll throw a couple of cones of incense in my case.

I think the best thing is is just AIR.

Put it on a floor stand with a little fan aimed at the soundhole to just keep the air exchange going for a while. (just keep abreast of the temp/humidity)

My guitars and gearcase innards absolutely REEK when I get home of "gig smoke" (I'm a non-smoker as well). The gear cases get popped open right away in the garage and guitars air out in their cases with a little fan on 'em. My clothes then end up on the back patio till morning.

If all else fails, . . . chuck a handful Altoids in the soundhole! ;)

I hate that residue stench even worse than the original smoke smell, which doesn't usually bother me. Ashtray cologne. It's usually all over everything gig related when I get home from a show. My cables usually wreak of it the most.

Gotta love it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Let me see if I got this straight...

Get a combination of eucalyptus, fabreze and baking soda and stuff it in the sound hole, take the burning cigarette out of my mouth, point a fan at the guitar and then stick incense cones in my nostrils. I'm hesitant to take my clothes off and put them on the back porch but, what the heck. Should the incense be lit before or after insertion?

I love this site. A lot of great advice along with amusing personality. I'll let you all know how this odor abatement works out... if I'm still alive.

DD.

years ago when I was a teen a sporting goods place had a fire. I bought a beautiful pair of leather boots that were smoke damaged for cheap. The day I threw those boots out about 5 years later I could still smell smoke if I pressed my nose to the leather .
good luck bro

Al, you press your nose against 5-year old shoe leather? Is there something you'd like to share with the board, or perhaps with a therapist?

About 40 miles up the freeway from me, towards Los Angeles, in a Nebisco cookie factory. No kidding. One night, about 12 years ago, I was working up in that area and there was a fire in the factory. For for miles around the area all you could smell was burnt cookies, and to this day, when I drive by and see the factory, that smell hits me.

I think it could be a while before I figure out how to tie this in with Ovation guitars.

I think "O"reos are made by Nebisco but I may be wrong.

So maybe try this, take a stocking or a half leg of pantyhose and fill it with ceder chips and tie off the ends so it's a ball. Throw that in the case or the guitar. Just a thought.

Maybe go to the source of the offensive odor, there are some great smelling pipe tobaccos that might improve the odor if put in there like cwk-2 suggests. I'm talking about the tobacco, not after it is smoked, walk by a pipe tobacco display and see what I am talking about. My only regret when I quit smoking was giving up my pipes.
