Location: Central Oregon | I'm looking at a Pacemaker 12 string on the bay. Looks like a good deal, anyone own one or played one? Comments would be appreciated. The 12 string deep bowl GAS is getting worse. I just missed two GC 12's.

Willard sold me one and it is in transit! Deep bowl and 12 strings. :D
Cleaned my garage today as part of the arrangement. Held a garage sale. During the slow periods I was playing my LX - one of the patrons saw it and asked. Got probably more info and enthusiasm than he wanted but now he knows!

Lots of good things have been said about this model. What a deal!!! I think this will be one buy you will enjoy for a lifetime. If you detect a touch of envy, you are right, 12 string GAS envy is the worst kind.

Location: Central Oregon | Thanks Bailey. Tony did a search for me & after I read a few old posts about the 1115 I couldn't pass it up, especially for that price. The free shipping is what put me over the edge :)
Now I have to figure out where to put it. There's a slot against the wall in the other room next to the ES175 & the Kalamazoo where the "dog killing" fiddle is. I can put the fiddle in the closet & put it in that spot. Problem solved & GAS abated again. I'll NEVER need another guitar! (I'm trying that out, how'd it sound?)

You'll love the guitar. I had to sell mine, kind of like Mike had to clean the garage, so I could go to the 2nd annual. Mine was A/E but I'm sure the sound will be close. I loved playing it in church for special solo songs and the congregation seemed to agree with me on the sound.

Location: Perth Amboy, NJ | I bought mine new in 1983, the identical one in sunburst. I still have it and play it regularly. It is a very bright, jangly guitar. The bass is bright too. Close your eyes while playing it and the word harpsichord comes to mind. Mine has been tuned to concert pitch for 21+ years without issues, so the build quality is excellent. I use D'Addario coated stings on mine, with the .010 high 'E'. As it is a slothead, and there are 12 strings to change, strings with more inherent life to them became a priority, as changing them is a pain to say the least. Finally, at some point I removed the two shims under the bridge saddle to lower the action. It may have compromised the sound a bit, I honestly don't remember, but it plays easily up the fretboard. Barre chords on the 10th fret are not a problem. For the price you got a great deal. I still have the receipt for mine - I paid $484 for it at Mandolin Bros. on Staten Island (including the brown case which is also in pretty good condition). Oh yeah - I keep a Dampit in it all the time. You might want to consider keeping one too. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Nils, looks like a pretty good deal to me. I have a 1118 Glen Campbell, which is pretty similar, and you will like your 1115. I use D'Addario .010s on my GC, and it gives a very bright sound. Check the neck for twist at the base of the headstock, mine has some from being at concert pitch for many years.

Location: Central Oregon | Well thanks guys, reading all this makes me really happy I took the leap. Ok, not much of a leap really, more of a hop. For $275 I couldn't see how I could go very far wrong. Had it been a more expensive guitar for a thousand dollars or so more money it may have qualified as a leap. :)
Btw, I've never had a slothead before, is there anything in particular I need to know about changing strings? Hints & "Kinks"? (Other than it's a pita.)
I still have a few sets of Elixirs light's (.010-.047) so I think I'll try some of those first. When I run out I think I'll try some of the coated D'Addario's.

Location: Upper Left USA | One of the biggest frustrations about being on the Left Coast and having things shipped from the Right is that no matter what your package spends the weekend in a wharehouse and the shipping status doesn't update til Monday a.m.
Looking forward to playing the 1615! I had given up on a 12 for a while and this just fell into place.
For sound - I have used the in-hole pickups before - their OK.
For Strings and maintanence is it needed to lube the spot between the stock and the bar the string wraps on is?
And yes, 12 string gas is the worst I've felt so far. I won't even try to bluff that I won't need another - I'll just go into remission.

I have basically the same guitar with electronics, and LOVE it! I found I liked the Martin Lights on it best, as they are a little heavier than the A'Darrio/Adamas/Elixers (12-54 I believe). The little heavier string really brings out it's tone...which is beautiful. I little harder to Bar and finger pick, but worth the effort!

Location: Fort Worth, Texas | Congrats on the 12-string!! I've got a '79 1615, I guess it's the same one with the electronics, great fun to play. I spent $250 for mine, well worth the price.
Since I've had it I've been working hard at band stuff, which we haven't worked the 12-string into any tunes yet, so I've been playing my Legend and Viper bass, and Hamer mostly. But with spring here it I'll soon be hosting guitar get togethers and it will get a real workout.

Location: Carle Place, NY | Nils: I have a 1755 12 string Custom Balladeer and I put on .010 Elixirs when I bought it a year ago. They are still on the guitar and still play great. I tried the new coated D'Addario EXP's in the custom light gauge (.011-.052) on a six string Ovation and found them to be very squeaky and also very hard on the fingers. If you are used to Elixirs you will not like the EXP's. Considering the PITA factor in changing 12 strings on a slothead, pinless bridge Ovation, Elixirs are the way to go. |

Location: Upper Left USA | As is their custom it was loaded on the truck in the wee hours this morning. Drop off at my house will be about noon. I'm at my desk waiting for whistle time and being very production oriented (not)!
I'll let you know when I get to inspect the package. I also have a local GC review to pass on. I went and played a ME 12, Taylor 12 for fresh comparisons at a GC yesterday.
Will follow up with info, facts, opinion and observations. Y'all will just have to figure what's what! |
