Thought I'd tell the caring and insomniatic what adventures I had today. Went to the Ted Brown in Tacoma to find elusive medium 12 strings and a Schubb 12 string capo for tomorrow's service - I'm determined to play my Pacemaker 2 frets lower and avoid capo/tuning issues. Anyway, I was rewarded with a treasure trove of O's to ogle and fondle.

Problem #1 - Grunge guitarists playing odd tuned strings without a care in the world about being in tune! Obviously they had a lot of time and no intention to purchase  Just like me!
Solution - give the young men some space, find my goods. 15 minutes later - still there - start re-tuning one of the banjos on the rack next to them!!! They clear out!

What did I find:

Celeb 12 string - ok

Celeb Super Shallow - ok

Balladeer Special with Bubinga wood top - eye candy - nice!

Elite T, in black - great sound - like my LX only less low end - if I end up single I gotta have one of these.

Adamas smooth top - 2nd oldest strings I've seen - felt sweet and played smooth. $1200

The Prize - a 96 Book Elite - Acres of Abalone and a Deep - I mean really Deep - bowl. Up to now I believed this board's talk on deep bowls and I figured it must be so - but today I had the experience!! This guitar was louder, smoother and stunningly detailed. The price was $1900.

If I thought I wanted an LX deep bowl I now KNOW I want one! :D

Other people coming in - one guy is re-tuning a banjo - gotta go!

Peace.

Ahh, the old "re-tune the banjo trick" eh? Very clever 86!
I spent the day riding around on my Wide Glide. But, since I'm batchin' this weekend, I spent most of the evening playing my guitars. (I'm glad my stupid shoulder is fixed.)
I played the 1115 & 1858 side by side for the first time.
They're both easy to play, although the 1115 has a slightly thinner neck. Same nut width, thinner the other direction. Not that the 1658 is thick at all, but the 1115 is slightly slimmer. A lot shorter too!
Since I'm alone I can play as loud as I want. The 1115 has quite a bit more punch. Just what I was after.
Good luck tomorrow Mike! :)

Btw, I never heard of an insomniatic before. Nice word, but it's not late yet on our end of the world, the time doesn't change for over an hour :)

Woodmeister... you're a genius! Next time I encounter "Stairway to Heaven" syndrome in the local musical instrument emporiums, I'm putting THAT into practice!

Good Story, I can just visualize those Grungers wondering why they are hearing good music and trying to pretend they don't hear it. Good review of the various models, as to insomniactics, I just reset all our clocks a couple hours early so I'm already up too late but my computer doesn't realize it yet. The biggest problem we have is that our dogs and cats have absolutely no concept of day light saving time, if we feed them an hour early they will expect to be fed again at their regular and "proper" time, or they will punish us slaves to their whims.

Mike, your "tune the banjo" trick won't work in my local Guitar Center:

1) They keep the acoustic instruments separate in the "acoustic room".

2) They rarely, if ever, have any banjos.

I'll have to see if tuning a mandolin works on grungers that come in to the acoustic room and torture a cheap acoustic so that you can't hear yourself play!!!! :D

Please don't think I'm picking on "Grungers"!!!

Any genre can be anoying when you want the acoustic room to yourself.

I actually commend these guys on their use of alternate tunings - just not the one that used non-tuned-alternate tunings!

I am still amazed - what is a "Book" guitar doing in a music store still? buying an 8 year old guitar new and getting a lifetime warrantee!

Al might say - that's a deal! What are these goining for on the Bay?

Hey Woody, I'm glad you got down to see that 96 Elite. I was there the weekend they got that guitar, about a year ago. I forget what story they told me about how they got it. I walked into Ted Brown and saw it and my jaw dropped. They had some funky tag on it and had it available for $1200. The only reason I didn't grab it at the time (and belive me I still thought about it) is that I already own one of these. I was such a dumb ass that I told them what it was, and they looked at me like I was high. About two weeks later when I went back in the price had changed, and they knew just what they had. I should have kept my mouth shut, and bought it, but then there is the wife to deal with. I hope that someone from the club gets it. I play mine at church every week, and it is sweet! I never take it out at nite so that I don't get it smoky. If you are ever heading toward Milton and want a cup of coffee, look me up, you can come over and jam anytime.

Glenn :)

Thanks for the invite! I haven't given up on a Northwest OFC gathering - that's 2 for local and 2 more from Oregon! I'll make it a goal to connect with you by this summer.

I was wondering what the "going" price was for a 96 collectors. It sure is a lovely guitar!

Have you found any really cool stores in the Puget Sound area?
