Found a real odd looking very very old looking Applause Guitar today. It has what looks like a Plastic neck that has been bound to aluminum. Head is cast one piece with the neck and is a black plastic? top of the body looks like solid sheet of red plastic as well? deep body bowl and there is a pickup that sets in the round soundhole that looks like it may be an original equipment piece? Chrome and wood? no information on the inside. Very ugly looking but I am wondering if it has collection value? This thing looks like it is a prototype perhaps one of the very first ones? Any of you guy's ever seen one like this? Randy

Hi Randy, I have one exactly like you describe which I bought in January 1977. It was $150 new with a case. It is not a collector's item in any way, shape or form. There were many, many of them made. They go for between $50 to $150 on eBay frequently.

The Applause line goes back to 1976. Search the archives and you will find some history on it from cwk2. He was there, he knows. There is also a chapter on it in Walter Carter's book "The History of the Ovation Guitar".

red top would have been from later, 78 maybe. Polyester on spruce ply top. Aluminum fingerboard with an 8# density foam backing and the plastic headpiece.
