I've always thought they were one of the more interesting collectors series made by Ovation. I curious as to your opinion on these. |

Location: Las Cruces, NM | Is the top really MAPLE, most of them were high quality spruce, I think Guild built a maple top guitar, but generally, maple was never considered a decent top wood, back and sides, but never top.
Bailey (I grew up in the middle of maple groves, so I know the wood intimately, I hauled tons of it out of the sawmills for blocking at the steel mills in Youngstown, OH) |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | I just sold a deep bowl 1990 Collectors', and it is a very good sounding Ovation. I don't think that the presence of a panelmaster top calls for a de facto dismissal of good tone. Some will sound better than others.
A few months ago I started a thread on favorite Ovation tops. I believe I mentioned that the birdseye maple on the '90 Collectors is my favorite. I have even inquired about having that put on a Custom Legend I have which needs a top replacement one of these days. (It's cheaper to buy a good used one than to have this done, btw.) |
