If a guy like me were to step off and pick up an Ovation Solidbody - with a budget of $250 - and a lean toward the sexy shape of the Breadwinner or Deacons I've seen - what parameters should I set on the radar screen? I have dabbled with electrics but my knowledge of pickups and processors is limited to 48-56 Fords and a quisinart.

I can see a guitar with a clean sound that can be molded through whatever Equipment is selected. Unless there's a head of lettuce involved I don't shred. What direction would you offer?

Woodrow, I don't have an answer for you. Used to be that I'd suggest a Viper. I got mine about 4 years ago for $250. But I just saw one go on ebay for (I think), around $600. Bargins may be gone unless you are very patient. I'd now suggest a Preacher. I think those can be had for about $350 or so.

A regular Viper (not a Viper 3) can occasionally be had in the $300 range, but tend to be near $500 for a good one. The Viper is a good choice for an all-around guitar. I am not fond of the Preacher pickups, but besides that they have a very unique sound, so maybe not as well suited for the entry level in my opinion.

On a side note, I have a Preacher with viper pickups in it that is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars.

As I am totally ignorant of the sounds that will come out of a Breadweiner, Deacon, Preacher or Viper I will have to learn more - no doubt.

It is the shape and simplicity that pushes me toward the Breadwinner/Deacon shape. Ashamedly I must seem like a spouse (gender left out intentionally) helping you shop for a car citing shape and color while you lift the hood and do horsepower estimates. I also realize that whatever I enter in with will help me appreciate the higher end - eventually resulting in Solidbody Gas. It won't be over until I custom order a Hamer... right?

Are the pickups on the Breadwinners proprietary? As in you can't exchange newer series Humbuckers, Alnico or P Whatevers - Without using a router?

Should I just forget it and buy Alpep's 12 string Ric?  :D

I, of course, would strongly reccommend a Viper. That's because I have one and am strongly opinionated with not much solid body experience outside of it (that makes me a solid body dummy, and the book "Solid Bodies for Dummies" hasn't been written yet by Miles). My Viper sounds good to me when plugged into a tube amp, a solid state amp etc. with a great deal of sound variety. If you tire of the Viper sound, Moodypi can show you how to turn it into a Viper Deluxe by cannableizing perfectly good inferior Ovation solid bodies.

Early breadwinner pickups are not interchangeable. Later Breadwinner, Deacon, Preacher, Preacher Deluxe, Viper and UKII pickups are all interchangeable with themselves, not aftermarkets. The only solidbodies that Ovation released with non-Ovation standard sized pickups were imports.
