Does anyone know if a circa '81 Custom Balladeer 1612 has the five piece neck or was the K-bar being used by that point? I know this may be close, but it may just be past the cutoff.
I have a chance in trading in my Ultra 1517 for this piece, ( sob, sob - so long old friend )and I agree, with the laminated top and all it just doesn't have the desired twang.

You'd have to look at the guitar. It's right at the point of change. If it has a truss rod cover, no k-bar.

CWK2,

Well the deal is made and I'm now the proud owner of a cherry 1612. The US 1517 Ultra served me well for years, but it was time to go. I got $200 trade in ( pretty much a 100% appreciation on initial cost) on the $400 Balladeer. It just seemed to lack the tonal quality, I'm sure you all can atest to that, lam top and all. The CB is much richer and deeper, and it's like mint. Not a scratch or ding anywhere. Oh, and yes, it does have the K-bar.

Hey finger, which did you get, a 1612 or a 1617? A 1617 would make it a legend.

maybe I'll become "Legend"ary down the road. It's a 1612. I spied this bad boy last week at a local shop and couldn't resist.
